As a trans New Yorker, this is heartwarming and amazingly powerful 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈🗽

Watching @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social, our next mayor, openly and proudly celebrate our history, our trans-ancestors, and his commitment to our future is exactly what I need this #NationalComingOutDay!!!

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

I think it was more that in my mind I just wanted to challenge and disagree with everything I was being taught...

Ah Gitten Moied from Omaha, Nebraska!

One of the traditional reasons given for the ritual of the Lulav and Etrog, is that it brings joy. When I first heard it as a child, I was skeptical. I still don't understand why, but it surely gives me joy 🌴🍋

Photo holding the "4 species" of the Lulav (a big palm tree branch), the Hadassim (Myrtle branches, 9 in this photo), and 2 willow branches, tied together. Plus an Etrog (Citron), greener than usual. Held next to a bug windows overlooking the street, while wearing a tallit.

A man gets a blowjob from a trans woman and his friends make fun of him so he goes to the police to claim she lied about being a woman. She was convicted of sexual assault and sentenced to nearly 2 years in prison because of a man's shame.

He can have my old one 🤣

Also love that @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social now has a copy of the largest Yiddish weekly newspaper!

Every NY politician should know that Yiddish is alive and kicking 😉

I totally agree!!! I always say that (non-Orthodox) American Jews made a mistake focusing more on celebrating Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur over Sukkot!

They are worn every week on Shabbat, on holidays (hence today), at weddings, and at some other special life cycle events.

They are actually far less delicate than they look. But they are kept in custom-made boxes that help keep the shape. They are also surprisingly lightweight for something so big.
abbystein.bsky.social
They used to be like a few centimeters thick. They have grown very fast over the past few decades. They have almost doubled from when I wore them when I got married in 2010.

And he seems to enjoy the fucking tree house. Damn.
abbystein.bsky.social
He also met with representatives of the other Satmar community, as well as (based on who I recognize in these photos) one of the leaders of the Pupa community - the largest Williamsburg Hasidic community after the 2 Satmars:

Last I chatted with him (Tuesday...) he had not yet claimed it 🤣 Will keep you updated.

On Rosh Hashanah, when I was sitting with him during Ma'ariv, he did express quite detailed fascination with my Baal Shem Tov Yicus, so who knows 🤷‍♀️

The Rebbe'la is a relative newcomer on the scene. He is a millionaire, brother of (supposed?) billionaire Yoely Landau.

The people around him though, especially Indig, are longtime Satmar (Aroinim) Askanim.

Here I go, finding myself agreeing with some Hasidic people. I guess once Hasidic... 🤷‍♀️

Yes, I agree: @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social is a friend of the Jewish community, and of all New Yorkers!!!

"Rabbi calls Mamdani a “friend of the Jewish community."
Screenshot from post by @jacobkornbluh, that reads:
"Rabbi calls Mamdani a “friend of the Jewish community."

Adds: "Congratulations - why do we have to waste a few weeks? — on becoming mayor of New York City. We hope you come back."

Mamdani: "Absolutely."

Mamdani was accompanied by Brad Lander and joined by Brooklyn DA Gonzalez

Perhaps I have taken this too much to heart 💔❤️‍🩹❤️

There cannot be peace without justice, and for that, there is still so much work to do.

For lack of better words, I am also sharing what my colleagues @rabbis4ceasefire.bsky.social wrote:

Another verse from Kohelet, has been on my mind today:
"טוֹב לָלֶכֶת אֶל בֵּית אֵבֶל, מִלֶּכֶת אֶל בֵּית מִשְׁתֶּה.
בַּאֲשֶׁר הוּא סוֹף כׇּל הָאָדָם, וְהַחַי יִתֵּן אֶל לִבּוֹ׃
It is better to go to a house of mourning than to a house of feasting;
For that is the end of every man, and a living one should take it to heart."

Watching the families of hostages we have gotten to know over the past few years, seeing accounts like @allhostages.bsky.social, cautiously celebrating.

I don't have the perfect words, but I wanted to share my imperfect thoughts.

Watching the clips of Palestinians celebrating yesterday was a feeling we have been waiting for 2 years. For Palestinians in Gaza going to bed knowing that they can hope to wake up with all their loved ones alive.

> were, as I shared yesterday:

Those are still the best words I can share the capture those feelings, after 2 years of unimaginable pain. I find myself often turning to ancient words, when I am struggling for new ones.

We said this morning:
הַמַּתִּיר אֲסוּרִים.
וְהַסּוֹמֵךְ נוֹפְלִים.
וְהַזּוֹקֵף כְּפוּפִים.
Releases the imprisoned.
Supports those who have fallen.
Lifts up the bent.

We have been fighting for a ceasefire for 2 years. Now, let's also lift the siege, end the occupation.
Finally, get liberation.

A season is set for everything, a time for every experience under heaven...
A time to give birth and a time to die...
A time to kill and a time to heal...
A time to break and a time to build..."

My first feelings yesterday upon hearing the news that a ceasefire agreement had been reached, >

It is the season for ceasefire! - at least we hope.

Often when I can think of new words to share, I turn to ancient words.

This Shabbat we will be reading in Kohelet (Ecclesiastes):
"לַכֹּל זְמָן, וְעֵת לְכׇל־חֵפֶץ, תַּחַת הַשָּׁמָיִם׃
עֵת לָלֶדֶת
וְעֵת לָמוּת.
עֵת לַהֲרוֹג
וְעֵת לִרְפּוֹא
עֵת לִפְרוֹץ
וְעֵת לִבְנוֹת׃

First ceasefire, then Palestinian liberation.

Today, after more than two years of the US-backed Israeli genocide of Palestinians in Gaza, President Trump announced that Israel and Hamas have agreed to the first phase of ceasefire agreement.
