Luxury! We used to hafta get 'out the lake, 3 am, clean the lake, eat a handful 'o hot gravel, work 20 hours a day at mill, for a penny a month, and dad would beat us about the head and neck with a broken bottle.

Usually were red. Purple for twenties. The colours have remained the same. Those were the days of pictorial chequebooks. Nat West or was it Midland 🤔 did a nice line in wild mammals so you wrote a cheque on one with, say, a field mouse or a squirrel. Or perhaps a nice water vole.

Think it was something like £32. But I wish I'd kept old things like that. I got moved about a lot and seemed to repeat that throughout adult life.
