"...remember what a fearless and trailblazing artist he really was. Not everything works, but you could say the same about Bowie... And judging him on that one video is akin to only remembering David Bowie for 'Let’s Dance'."

Released in 1986 #RobertPalmer’s single “Riptide” hardly touched the charts, but gave its name to his defining album. Blending sultry vocals with a retro groove, Riptide twice channels vintage swing in the midst of the 80s as it opens and closes his double Platinum album.
'The Songs Of Walter Donaldson' (44 track 2CD compilation, 2007) features 'Riptide', sung by Robert Palmer. Quite likely the most famous and most popular cover of what was otherwise an obscure song. And yes, it was produced by Bernard Edwards!

They lived on the same London road, albeit not quite at the same time. Palmer's dark, dingey and occasionally flooded basement on Dennington Park Road was a great reason to take up record boss, Chris Blackwell's offer of a house on the beach front at Nassau.
No one likes a tricky question, but have a go...

Q: What was something that Olivia Newton-John and Robert Palmer had in common?

Batley, Yorkshire to be exact...

Thank you... The obscured one he's holding is James Brown 'Hot Pants'. But what is the last one?
... Billie Holiday 'The Lady Sings Vol. 2' & 'The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads'. But I wonder what the others were?
2003, #RobertPalmer in the Archives (colourised) . He's holding a James Brown album and another one above his head that I can't identify. The others are...
I asked Grok 3 to profile @Addictioners... Oh, the London taxi is a reference to his first 1974 music video. I am continuing to post both on X and here on B, and yes, the name is a riff on #Directioners and #Beliebers. It made so much more sense in 2013!
Mr Chris Benson reviews #RobertPalmer's Live At the Apollo, the latest of his Palmer videos. He considers the 2025 reissue of 'Robert Palmer Live at the Apollo' on CD.

I didn't recognise the signature on this collectors item of #RobertPalmer's 'At His Very Best'. It's apparently long time drummer Dony Wynn. How cool. 🥁
His cover of Connie's 'Stupid Cupid' is fantastic. Humerously, in the middle of a R&R charged live concert he would take great delight in saying "and now... a song by Connie Francis"!
RIP Connie Francis 1937 - 2025

#RobertPalmer grew up listening to Nat King Cole, Billie Holiday and #ConnieFrancis. As a teenager he called this his 'parents music' but he came to love these artists and their classic songs. On his final album Drive (2003) Palmer covered 'Stupid Cupid'.

The Power Station would reform, release an album and tour again with #RobertPalmer fronting the band. Performing here at the Hanover Grand, London on 17th September 1996, 11 years after #LiveAid40
#RobertPalmer disembarking having finally made that long overdue appointment with superstardom.
Oh, and head back to February (below) for my retelling of the Power Station story...
I believe they hired Michael, re grouped in the USA and played Live Aid as his first venue. All in record time. I have no doubt that Palmer would have pulled it off superbly had he been there. However, he was probably at home in Nassau thinking, I'm happier here than being in amongst that.
Queen played after Bowie and it's no surprise. David was stunning. The audience played along with playful Freddy and that's the true secret of Queen's success.
#LiveAid40
There were some great performances that day. Yes Queen was eternally memorable. But Bowie and Ferry, to name only two, offered a great set 40 years ago.
... Another time, another place.
