Just fucking reuse Shin Mazinger at that point, seriously. At least that gives us playable Sayaka and Boss.

You know, Boss Borot, the only mecha in vs. Great General of Darkness for most of the fucking movie? The movie you're "adapting" in your game???
Again, why bother including these if you don't even want to pretend like you care? The game is already niche and made for existing mecha fans. I don't see the point in half-assing inclusions in a game centered around a niche genre if you're not going to put passion into it.
I was really excited to see Mazinkaiser come back as the Mazinger rep, but it's very frustrating that for this "big return," we get two of the seven generals, and a recolored Great General of Darkness, no Warrior Beasts, instead giving us JUST Kedoras.

The asset reuse is a little insulting.
In regards to Combattler, it's post-plot, but basically pretends the second half of the show just doesn't exist, and only has one enemy (Garuda) - I feel like you could at least spare the effort to do something interesting and bring in elements from the second half (Kerot, Janela, etc.).
i do feel like we're still trapped in the loop of being unable to or not wanting to give these properties the same treatment as the newer inclusions. combattler and mazinkaiser are nice inclusions in Y, and are a step above where the series WAS, but still aren't at the level they should be, imo

Another scrub done, one that's been a on/off project since February, comes Gaiking: Legend of Daiku-Maryu; this was a on/off scrub project going back a decade and while the subs still need a new TL altogether, I tried my best to make something work with the Hulu subs, find it on the usual site

idk, shouting into the void on this one, i guess.

i think Y still has a lot of growing pains but it's the first time it's felt like any of these shows mattered, or tried to matter, though--
And by newer shows, I mean within the last two decades, or anything from 2000 onwards, but even then you're probably starting to stretch what the average anime or newer mecha fan is even familiar with at that point. But it definitely seems like the bias skews towards being more faithful to those.
So I definitely think the inclusion of older shows is a contentious point because it really is a case of "who does this appeal to?" when they aren't given the same treatment as newer material. At that point, besides licensing fees, I can see the argument for SRW shifting to ENTIRELY new shows.
I wouldn't consider myself as "deep" into the genre as others, but I'm deep enough in that if I'm told an episodic super robot show from the 70s is good, I'll probably check it out, and that's why I did eventually watch it, and discovered how much I loved it. Word of mouth.

Not from SRW.
I didn't watch Combattler V because of its appearance in SRW30. I thought the robot was cool and the characters were neat, but nothing about it made me go "I'm going to go watch this 54 episode show," because the only damn thing in 30 was the robot itself, and none of the cool things from the show.
Because how are you supposed to get people who have never seen the show to watch it if the only thing that's there is the robot itself and the characters are mostly an afterthought?

It feels like the inclusion of these works is an afterthought/obligation - a half-measure that makes nobody happy.
So who is that even appealing to? You aren't keeping the show "relevant" by shoving it into the plot of a newer show. You're not appealing to those who have seen it because the aforementioned lack of meaningful adaptation or integration. And you're not making newer or younger mecha fans interested--
I think my opinions lie in the camp of "if you are going to include these works, make them count." I think the years of post-plot early Showa Era super robot inclusions did more harm than good, because... They're just *there,* you aren't doing anything meaningful with them.
I find discussions on old shows' inclusion in Super Robot Wars interesting because I can see both sides of the argument (for/against including them in new entries).
i'm cooked, i saw this and immediately wanted to pablo it
(offer to pay people to do this for me is still open btw just leave a comment and ill dm you)
had a "fine, i'll do it myself" moment with these SRW sprites i was trying to pay other people to do for me and damn this spriting shit is hard

got a lot of things to improve on but hey it's all part of the learning experience
might cut my losses and just redraw assets and use a simpler style shoot more for compact/compact 3 styled sprites or just outright use my sketches and clean them up rather than do pixel art at all lol
referenced Daimos's AP sprite since I thought it blended better with the general style the J-L era sprites are rendered in

trying to get a sketch i made into pixel art is a pain in the ass, especially when trying to replicate complex shading, which i have no familiarity with lol

Also I'm really sad there's seemingly no BD of this (or at least any rips online of one), because while this never hits the animation peaks Iczer-1 did, it still looks REALLY good and I'd love to have it in HD.
After being disappointed with Iczer-1, I was pleasantly surprised with Iczer-3. It does nothing truly groundbreaking, but unlike its predecessor, it has a focus, and it knows what it wants to be - the end result is a fun six episodes with great character designs and pretty good action.
