I would like everyone to meet Agate, a gargoyle master thief, and Pebble, her henchman/boyfriend kobold.
Their latest heist was quite successful. #art #artonbluesky

Patience draws water from a nearby well and carries it to the stable.

Without another burden to draw her ire, my Grandmother's attention instead fall, as it is accustomed, upon her "invalid daughter-in-law". The added indignity of having been deprived some true turbulence seems to incite her further. Would that, if only for the sake of momentary peace, she would swallow down that dose of vinegar rather than spewing it forth.

Patience arrives at the barn and lift the heavy beam over the door to enter.

We each have out own means of nourishing our spirits I suppose.

Patience enters the barn carrying the water. She greets each stall as she passes.

Good morning Lady. Good morning Lily, 'Morning Chesnut, Hilde, Freya, Pincess,

Patience's grandmother talks as she eats.

"Someone has to, otherwise no one would ever learn. That Dikkeman did well. Has a boy about your age. Handsome. You should see if he's attending the Spring Festival with anyone. Perhaps he'll ask you to go dancing.

Patience looks at her Grandmother, mortified at the thought.

"You really should say less."

Her Grandmother jumps to her feet.

"Patience! It is not your place to talk back to your elders."

She walks around the table and takes up Patience's plate and ushers the girl out of her chair.

"Up! Up! You may finish after you are done with the stable."

"Alright already"

Patience gets out of her seat and walks to the back door where she takes a coat from the hook and puts it on.

The cool morn draws forth spirits in whisps of frozen breath.

Patience exits through the back door and makes her way down a little path towards the barn.

It is nearly spring and we have seen only a few thin sheets of brittle frost. No more than three fortnight's worth by my count.

Patience and her grandmother sit down at the table.

"How is the feed looking?"

"More than enough since-"

"Right. You should cycle the bags then. Keep the damp from setting in."

"May I do it this afternoon? I'd like to spend some time with Mother today."

"You may spend time with your Mother this evening. While you study."

"Mother won't have any energy then. She hasn't been-"

"That woman. It's always one thing or another. God only knows how much your Father has spent on those remedies. I told him to marry that Miller girl. Wide hips that one. But my boy was transfixed by that consumptive glow. Lost his chance to that Dikkeman boy of all people."

"You shouldn't say such things."

Grandmother heads into the dining room with two plates of food.

"But you Father would rather play his little games with his boys, than just man up and ask for what he's rightfully earned."

Patience takes the covered plate and heads towards the stairs.

Perhaps, if I am swift and silent.

As Patience reaches the foot of the stairs her Grandmother approaches.

"And just where are you going young lady?"

"To bring Mother her breakfast."

"You'll not be wiling away the whole morning with your Mum. Besides, no doubt she's still sleeping."

Patience mopes into the dining room.

"Fine."

"Go eat at the table. Then Get on with your chores. I'll see that your Mother is fed when she arises.

Patience enters the kitchen where her grandmother cooks by the fire.

"Where has Father gone?"

"He and his little gang of miscreants took of first thing this morning. Wouldn't tell me where they were going. I swear they're up to no good. No son of mine should be socializing with that lot still. When he was a young man, well, boys will be boys. But really, at his age? I keep telling him to go speak to the Captain."

Patience's Grandmother distributes food onto three plates and places a cover over one.

"After all my boy has done for him, the Captain won't have forgotten. A straight shooter through and through. Always was."

Patience stands at the top of the stairs as her grandmother steps through the doorway, into the kitchen.

"Wipe your feet Patience"

A small swell of anger rises within, but reflexively, I choke it down.

"I don't want you tracking dirt onto my clean floors. And cover that mirror. Damn thing's a hazard."

Patience hangs a red sheet over the silver mirror by the window at the top of the stairs before hesitantly turning back to face the dark cellar.

I dare not articulate this sensation. I let it slip past. Wait for the feeling to collapse and pass on without taking form. I will not give it a name. For fear that my words may breath some life into the cold ether.

Patience cowers in fear.

Whatever intelligence commands this vice takes a moment to witness it's quarry. I am beheld.

The entity looses it's grip

Then, curiously, released.

Patience bolts up the stairs while the spirit fades into the darkness. She collides with her Grandmother at the top of the steps, in the morning light from a nearby window, a small jar flying from Patience's hand.

"Good Heavens!"
"Grandmother!, there was a... a-"

Her grandmother examined the small clay jar.

"Peas? Did I ask for pickled peas? Patience, it is too early for this nonsense."

The old woman turns her back on her granddaughter.

"Grandmother, I swear, in the cellar- It grabbed me!"

"The sun is hardly up yet we are already called upon by Faeries and Hobgoblins. I guess I shall be having peas with my eggs this morning."

Patience notices something move across the room and races towards it.

What's there?

"Get back here!"

She arrives at the bottom of the stairs but the specter has vanished.

"?"

Suddenly, from below, Patience's ankle is seized.

"Oh no!"

I thrash against the snare
but it binds to me.
Drawing me down,
back
into the Gloom.

Patience is confronted by a terrifying visage.

A young girl stands in an unfinished cellar, straining to see in the low light.

I know it's here.

But how am I to find it?

A voice calls down from above

"Patience! What's taking you so long"

"I'm looking, Grandmother. But it's so dark. Can't I use the lamp"

"Your father didn't bring any oil from town. You have good eyes now quit dawdlng!"

Something stirs behind the girl in the dark.

While her protestations exit no spark to illuminate this void, Grandmother's words ignite a fire within my chest that makes my face fidget and my hand flutter.

We look down a winding drive towards a rust colored farm house sitting amidst a field of yellowed grass. At the start of the drive stands a wooden mailbox emblazoned with a metal number on it's front, 44 and a name on it's side in whitewash, Praisegod. A rough wooden fence stretches from the road past the house to meet the stable behind. Above flow a bank of clouds lit up red and orange by the morning sun float overhead, curled like a fist.

We see the front porch framed by a leafless tree. A carved panel bearing a horseshoe hangs over the entrance.

Around the side of the house we see the red double doors to the cellar set into the stone foundation by the base of the chimney.

We descend down, down, down, down.
