My 2nd blog post of the week, and 2nd in my series about saving searches, is all about changing to the new EBSCO platform. My initial perspective on good and bad things, and a focus on the process I used to prepare, ensuring I continue to have access to all my #SystematicReview searches #AliceWrites
EBSCO changes: adjusting and preparing
An academic librarian’s report on exploring the old and new EBSCOhost database platforms for literature searching, with a process for keeping access to saved searches.

Today I didn’t do anything, and yet I did so much. Jobs around the house are very time consuming, but glad I have made progress. #OntologicalOctober #Day11

Interesting post about generative AI use in marking & a reason-people not having time to mark.

I’m thinking about how marking should be a useful experience for the assessor, not only to provide feedback and grading for students, but to learn about needs and from students’ ideas. The ideal anyway.
It is deeply upsetting when a student turns to a chatbot to offload their learning, but to see faculty follow suit and do similarly by using AI to grade students to save time is beyond demoralizing to our profession and undermines the very principle of learning. It also creates some unsettling questions for both students and faculty. Namely, what’s the point of any of college if no one wants to do the work?

Tho what I have to show for myself is clearing following a spilt cafetière, working together to unblock the sink, chasing a missing supermarket delivery, & dealing with it when it arrived-work in progress! & making juice & fruit salad.
I’ve barely gotten to what I thought in advance I needed to do.

A Saturday at home with no specific plans (though lots to do and lots on my mind) is a wonderful week. And really needed after a busy work week. I love busy weekends with plans too, but am so glad to be able to potter today.

I have split the slide into two now, but have to admit I’m relying on my enthusiastic talking to the slide to make it come to life.

I showed my daughter this slide last night (after she’d shown me the snazzy slides she’d created for something at school) and she said it had too much on it and that I need to have pictures (not just screenshots from EBSCO!). And have a ‘quiz time’…

It’s been a good evening. We’ve started #CelebrityTraitors and #Uncloaked (spotting the usual chess board in the latter - looking forward to seeing the game develop). A great watch, and the only reason we didn’t watch Thursday’s episodes was tiredness #OntologicalOctober #Day10

It’s funny (and lovely) to have a notification on Facebook saying @brunellibrary.bsky.social has created a event that you might want to attend, and then look at it and see that it’s for an event (Bloomberg) that I’m running myself.

There are times (like now) where I’m so proud of a slide I’ve created. I’m sure I’ll come back to it another time, with critique and areas for developments. But right now I think this slide will very important for my uses in many things.

Glad I hadn’t yet made a recorded demonstration for sharing, but a shame that the two modules I’ve already demonstrated it too won’t have had the best example.

Have realised that my workaround for setting up searches in multiple journals in EBSCO databases (since the Publications authority on the new platform doesn’t do what the old search did) also doesn’t work ideally. I have another workaround, but it’s not as straightforward.

For me the concept of needing/wanting to imagine fiction as a particular place just isn’t there. I have the information the author needs me to have, as they’ve written it, and putting in more detail would be a distraction from getting on with the story. It’s not something I think about in the moment

I’m creating a search example, worked through in PowerPoint slides with screenshots, that I hope will be an example to use and extract from in lots of teaching this year. I’m having fun! It is building on things I developed last year, along with new ideas I have developed more confidence in.

Today I got to have a new ‘I have aphantasia (etc)’ discussion. Explaining how I think to someone interested, and comparing different ways of thinking and living. I used to have this conversation all the time, but not so much in the last few years. And I love it! #OntologicalOctober #Day9

This isn’t an issue unique to travel. If you aren’t properly familiar with any subject area then you don’t have the knowledge to be able to double check an AI answer (without lots of researching elsewhere).
One thing Ghani suggests is to be specific as possible in your queries and verify absolutely everything. However, he acknowledges the unique problem travel poses to this method, as travellers are often asking about destinations that they're unfamiliar with. But if an AI tool gives you a travel suggestion that sounds a little too perfect, double check it. In the end, Ghani says the time spent verifying AI information can in some cases make the process just as laborious as planning the old-fashioned way.

This evening I was out for great book conversation, deviating to other conversation at times. Then nice to come home to my family playing cards. Followed by lots of proof-reading. Lots of activity on top of a busy work day #OntologicalOctober #Day8

I started reading my first Trollope book (The Warden) halfway through January 2025, and am now 17 books in, with a long way to go. Admittedly have read lots of other things too.

I am a traitor to my family, by being out tonight, when #CelebrityTraitors starts. We will need to wait until Friday to watch it.

My 14th #DARTS9 slide was about advocating for librarians' involvement in research, and specifically in systematic reviews. And sharing my research experiences. I wouldn't have talked about all of these - I do like to share my experiences rather a lot!

Today the 1st episode of season 5 of Six Minutes came out (if you have a subscription) & this evening we listened to it (& Rewind), sitting in the dark, me & my son & my daughter (who hadn’t listened to season 4 - I think she’s into it again). I fell asleep during Rewind! #OntologicalOctober #Day7
