the Aretha series started on GB & migrated to SFC; I've only played the GB ones & my impression was that they were beneficiaries of being early RPGs on GB, but they certainly had their fans

the OG creator was at the 35th event: his studio's still active & he's still a frontline dev, apparently

for the unaware, FEDA was a SFC SRPG in the Shining Force vein, developed by the studio (but only a small handful of the same ppl) behind Force & Shining in the Darkness

it got a Saturn remake & a PS sequel; none of em were especially popular, & the OG's mostly known for being a bargain bin staple

like, do I personally care that they "fixed" Turok 2? no, but can anyone who played a version that didn't have them wandering aimlessly for hrs really say they played Turok 2?

there's also a degree of inconsistency to the changes: sometimes they're based on cut/unfinished content, sometimes they're back-ported from other versions, sometimes they're completely from the minds of the porters; some of the more recent ones were sourced directly from fan mods, etc...

re: Nightdive, my specific issue is how little acknowledgment their changes even get in some quarters—ppl reflexively report that they're putting out exacting recreations when that's increasingly, obviously not true

tbh I wish people were louder about them doing stuff like this—as time goes on, they've gotten more brazen about how they editorialise or straight-up change the games they're "preserving" while also expecting one to jump through increasing hoops in order to identify or undo their changes

For those unaware, this might be one of Nightdive's weirdest remasters. They took the PC and N64 versions of Forsaken - basically two different games with completely different levels - and stapled them together into a frakensteined hybrid.

It works surprisingly well.

fwiw they did originally address the input issues for the later SNES version, but there are other fixes/changes from the SNES version that weren't replicated for the NSO SFC release, so they didn't merely replicate/backport the SNES fixes

@luigiblood.bsky.social yo! I figure you're the one to ask: how difficult is it to identify & analyse game-specific NSO patches on the backend? it seems they've attempted to fix Garou Densetsu Special's notoriously finnicky input buffer, among other fixes, so it'd be nice to get a direct fix list
