Being ‘bookish,’ i’ve got some huge blind spots in my knowledge of pop culture; so, until reading this post + Googling (see screenshots), i knew very little about Jared Leto.

I recall seeing him act just once (in Requiem for a Dream, which had a deep impact on me) many years ago.

Now, i get…

Q is it true people hate jared leto — Private

• Al Overview

Public sentiment toward Jared Leto is complex and divided, rather than a simple matter of universal "hate". He has dedicated fans who support his career as both an actor and the frontman of the band Thirty Seconds to Mars. However, he is also a highly controversial and disliked figure due to a combination of his behavior and professional choices.

Reasons for negative public perception include:

Allegations of sexual misconduct

• In June 2025, an investigative report from Air Mail detailed allegations of sexual misconduct against Leto from nine different women, some of whom were reportedly underage when the alleged incidents occurred.

• A representative for Leto denied all of the allegations.

• Similar accusations of predatory behavior toward younger women have circulated online and been documented for years.

Controversial "cult-like" retreats

• In 2019, Leto and his band, Thirty Seconds to Mars, hosted a retreat for fans called "Mars Island" in Croatia. Attendees, many of whom were young women, paid high prices to take part in activities while dressed in white robes alongside Leto.

• Promotional material from the band openly described the event as a "cult". Critics viewed the event as a cynical and predatory scheme to exploit his most fervent followers.

Extreme and inappropriate "method acting"

• Leto's practice of method acting has drawn widespread criticism for being disruptive and making co-stars uncomfortable.

• For his role as the Joker in the 2016 film Suicide Squad, co-stars like Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, and Will Smith reported receiving bizarre gifts from Leto. Reports included a live rat, a dead pig, bullets, anal beads, and used condoms.

• Davis described the gifts as "really horrific". While Leto later denied some of the more extreme claims, he downplayed the incidents as harmless fun. Q is it true people hate jared leto — Private

Performance as the Joker

• Many critics and fans disliked Leto's "cringey," over-the-top, and short-lived portrayal of the Joker in Suicide Squad, especially when compared to previous performances by Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix.

• His attempt at extreme method acting was widely seen as a gimmick that failed to elevate a poorly written character.

• After Joaquin Phoenix's successful standalone Joker film was announced, Leto reportedly attempted to stop the project from moving forward.

Perceived vanity and arrogance

• Leto has been described by critics and some of his co-stars as arrogant and self-absorbed.

• This perception is amplified by his public stunts, including climbing the Empire State Building in 2023.

• His response to criticism over his method acting ("if you don't like it, basically, you can kiss my ass") further reinforced a reputation for dismissiveness.

Just this fact, there's a man in our White House constantly expressing his hatred for half the country & making clear his desire to strip away programs supported by Democrats, should tell millions & millions why they must be a part of the No Kings protest (that is, IF they still believe in America).

Q must we love our timeline — Private

• Al Overview

The notion that we "must" love our timeline is not a requirement for a meaningful or happy life.

Romanticizing or judging the time period we live in is often based on an incomplete picture, and it is possible to live well by accepting the present, focusing on what you can change, and avoiding harmful comparisons.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲

• 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀, 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘁. Every historical period has its unique challenges, dangers, and injustices. Romanticizing a past era often means ignoring its hardships and inequalities for most people. It's inaccurate to assume that life in a different period was inherently better.

• 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱. Viewing the past as a "better time" can make you feel that you'll never be happy again. This outlook can prevent you from creating new positive memories in the present and keep you from moving forward in your own life.

• 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀. Comparing your life to others' "highlight reels" on social media can create feelings of inadequacy. This can diminish your ability to appreciate your own worthwhile accomplishments, especially when they don't align with traditional milestones.

• 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴. It is possible to acknowledge the benefits of the present, like scientific advancements, better health, and widespread access to information, without ignoring its persistent or new problems. Acknowledging both the good and the bad is a realistic approach.

Q must we love our timeline

• Al Overview

You are not obligated to love the time period you live in. Romanticizing the past or future often ignores the unique problems and injustices of those eras. While it is not necessary to love the present, being able to engage with it and find meaning can help foster happiness and contentment.

𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲

People's opinions on their own time period are often mixed and complex.

• Some are grateful for modern advancements like scientific knowledge, inclusivity, and freedom of expression, while still recognizing current challenges.

• The desire for a different, "simpler" time is common, but this often overlooks the hardships and limitations that existed.

• A feeling of disconnect between personal values and mainstream culture is a common reason for not liking one's time period.

• Focusing on a romanticized version of another era can prevent you from appreciating your present and creating new memories.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁

Choosing to appreciate and engage with the present, rather than passively accepting it, is a path to a more fulfilled life.

As an expert on authoritarian regimes, I've studied historical and contemporary secret police forces extensively across Africa, Asia and Europe. They typically meet five criteria:

• they're a police force targeting political opponents and dissidents

• they're not controlled by other security agencies and answer directly to the dictator

• the identity of their members and their operations are secret

• they specialise in political intelligence and surveillance operations

• they carry out arbitrary searches, arrests, interrogations, indefinite detentions, disappearances and torture.

How close is ICE to becoming a secret police force? Let's consider each of these criteria.
