I recall reading the remain campaigns model had them winning on polling day as it used normal electoral modelling and didn’t account for a lot of people coming out to vote who hadn’t voted since say 1997.
I am confused by this? At the last budget Labour froze taxes on those in work and increased the taxes the wealthiest pay (increased capital gains, VAT on private schools etc)
It is very easy to go on TV as say a greens spokesperson and say that we should have a wealth tax, should have more renewable energy and build a million council homes (but not build on the green belt) as they are not going to have to do it or try to win 35% of the vote.
Labour need more politicians who speak human but there is a special responsibility you have as a government spokesperson- a stupid phrase lives with you a lot longer and your words matter and can shape things in a way it doesn’t in opposition.
So often you see senior leaders go ‘X is using TikTok, we need to use it’ without thinking what they’re going to say, what the purpose is or what the aim is- there’s no point Labour MPs going on podcasts unless they have something good to say.
I became particularly enraged when comms where blamed for the Tulip scandal- a comms person did not make Keir appoint her, nor make her take ownership of properties 25 years ago.
I’ve said it before but everyone also blames comms and thinks comms is easy because we consume media and are political junkies- and the thick of it makes people think that there is a comms guy who controls what 200+ ministers & advisers say
These are the same people who will moan when the local council don’t have money for bunting or some other piece of civic pride related stuff- people just have a very odd idea of how revenue is raised and spent
The U.K. licensing regime is extremely regressive and ridiculous at times and I support a culture which gets Government out of the way- tackle binge drinking, ultra processed food and vaping and you’ll see a much bigger public health return
I actually disagree with this- while we obviously need to address the cost side as a huge driver pubs are a key good thing and the really harmful stuff tends to happen outside (e.g binge drinking at home)
I’m not sure I agree with the claim- like Amerika we too have legislation that has helped makes pub accessible and the mountain of mobility scooters parked outside our pubs does suggest they are quite accessible.
Should go further and tax supermarket beer at a higher rate than at the moment- raises revenue, targets the biggest source of binge drinking and might help get people back into pubs.
Do you think it’s acceptable to use the word ‘import’? A phrase we use when talking about steel, food and machines when talking about human beings? These people were not ‘imported’ and it’s terrible that you are sharing an article like this.
As you know some people from both communities decided to move somewhere else (for a million reasons!) and others choose to stay- both options are fine!
It’s so odd. I enjoy seeing the signs (well mostly the food) of the old orthodox Jewish community when I visit north London- yet none of these writers ever seem to write about them in the same way they do about muslims who are doing the same thing.
I really really hate how the word ‘imported’ is used more and more by people who claim to be respectable. It’s a horrible phrase to use about people who migrate around the world.
The most macabre was a family member who was a talented artist so was given the task of sketching the trenches to see hidden artillery- he had to spend hours in dugouts /observation posts sketching. Yet still had to do grunt work like carrying a 10 litre vat of tea (and nearly got killed doing it)
Even in my families history the only ones who got specialist roles had a pre war qualification (e.g one who was a gas engineer ended up working on the huge pipeline for D-Day- operation comet maybe?)
This is a really funny sub plot- it’s the same way if we had conscription I’d like to imagine I’d be a staff officer or have some sort of liaison role but the reality is I speak one language, am relatively fit and lack a trade- so frontline infantry it is!
Also a lot of it is a reaction to state failure e.g HCLH had to employ more people post grenfell, cabinet office has about 5 public inquires to deal with and two compensation schemes.
We all have eyes and know that the leadership only changed tact on the welfare reform after a very public rebellion- they ignored the months of private warnings from the PLP, whips and loyal NGOs!
Applying for uni has ucas and you broadly know what to expect whereas apprenticeships are often a lottery which depends on the course provider and the company
