As such I hope a billionaire rides on the first warp capable ship and the ship implodes into a momentary black hole due to a miscalculation in the space-time manipulation.

The problem is this mass-energy has to have an exotic form so as it can bend space-time to achieve faster than light travel. That being said it is possible within the realm of the physics of our universe.

So the "study" they're referring to is Dr. Miguel Alcubbiere's paper from the 90s. Other scientists have done papers on the subject as well and have gotten the "enourmous" energy down to the mass-energy equivalent of the Voyager probes (ie the enegy equivalent to the mass of the probe).
