Ohmigod I thought it was just me. I've been driving a rental car for the last two days and it nags me constantly. As I'm driving down an expressway at 140 kph it suddenly starts beeping and flashing with the instruction "STAY IN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE".

My argument would be that language skills don't map to simple levels. Reading, writing, listening and speaking are different skills, and often vary hugely in a single learner.

Even that though... Lots of highly educated people will score B2 on writing and reading, but might struggle in speaking or listening. Language learning doesn't happen uniformly across levels.

I think my distinction between gambling (betting on sporting events) and gaming (online roulette, bingo, etc) is causing confusion

By "gaming", I mean betting on pure random events, like online casinos. As opposed to betting on sports, like horse racing or football.

Gambling is not nearly as dangerous as gaming. Hence the industry's push to move people from the former to the latter.

I think the real life story happened afterwards... But does demonstrate that Golding's view of human nature was completely wrong. He's describing the behaviour of young people damaged by colonialism
