Tonight is clear evidence this country is really and truly done as the shining city. I just have to make it a few more years to retire from federal service. After that, we will have the flexibility to look at exit options (to the extent any decent country will still accept Americans).
Can’t decide which is the more relevant feature of this video: the actual lesson on tariffs or the barely conscious students (voters) the lesson is being taught to.

I’ve disagreed with many US foreign policy positions over the years but never have I so vehemently wanted what we were attempting to achieve to abjectly fail. Europe and 🇺🇦 are simply right and we, while not 🇷🇺 (yet), are the bad guys here.
“”What we need to hear from President Zelenskyy is that he has regret for what happened, he’s ready to sign this minerals deal and that he’s ready to engage in peace talks.””

- Mike Waltz

Our foreign policy is “you’re not my friend anymore unless you do say you’re really sorry and mean it.”
Trump halts military aid to Ukraine
The minerals deal is still on the table. So are deals with Russia.

Quality skeet.
can't believe it's 2025 and i'm stressed about tariffs and measles, like am i a character in an american girl book
Yes there is nuance in every comparison, but on the top line issue of “is 🇺🇦 defending itself pointless/hopeless”, this is 100% right.
Crass but a directionally accurate depiction of where the Trump administration is taking our foreign policy.
I have worn the 🇺🇸 flag to work everyday for closing on 2 decades and, whatever else has been going on, that has always been a source of pride. We have never had a perfect foreign policy, but between the UN vote on Monday and the farce in the Oval today, I am just plain ashamed.
As a #JAG, this is stunning. We are always quick to make clear that JAGs recommend and commanders decide, but most commanders take the advice of their JAGs seriously. If (as I assume) the new TJAGs are political loyalists, it will be an extremely alarming sign for what this admin intends for #DoD.
@fpwellman.bsky.social, concur but I stand by my assessment that the TJAG firings represent by far the most troubling signal here.

Why did Hegseth just fire every top military branch lawyer? What did they refuse to sign off on?

A Pulitzer awaits the reporters and outlet who can tell the public.
The TJAGs are by far the most ominous part of this.
Best case, it’s just that they were involved in DEI. Worst (and more likely, in my view) case, they want to install political loyalists who will not object on e.g. posse comitatus grounds to what this admin intends to do with DoD domestically. For me, this is the most alarming development yet.
Firing the Chairman is not great but firing all three service TJAGs is absolutely an ominous sign for how this admin intends to test the limits of using DoD.

When I get back to military justice, I genuinely can’t wait for the first alcohol or sexual misconduct-related investigation where the member tries to work in the example of SecDef to a rehabilitative potential argument.

Imagine the message to America's enemies that the Secretary of Defense - normally a position filled by overwhelming bipartisan consensus - has squeaked into his job with a Vance tie-breaker after repeated concerns about his character and lack of experience.
I work in a 30-person office tucked into a lonely corner of a large base. There are at least a dozen people in my single office more qualified by experience, temperament, and judgement to be SecDef than Hegseth. This is SNL come to life.
The man now charged to organize, train, equip, and lead our armed forces through an era of renewed great power competition. What could go wrong? Jesus, this is just embarrassing.
I’m in favor of increasing the control/regularity of the process of coming to the US in a way that balances humanity/national interest, but terrorizing elementary age kids to make a political point and spread fear (given ICE would know the apprehensions would be blocked) is just disgusting.

As fairly low-level DoD attorney, I work in an office with at least 4 people who are unquestionably more qualified to be SecDef. In the single building we work in, there are dozens more qualified. Hegseth is such a ridiculous nominee he wouldn’t make sense as SecDef in a bad SNL skit.
Anyone else starting to see a lot of follows/attempted engagement from onlyfans-type accounts? 😑
