A tale of two white beads.

These are both made of Andalusia, Alabama, kaolin clay. The bottom one was fired at 900°C, while the top one was fired ay 860°C.

The clay had some minor veins of ferric oxide, so I assume the bottom bead had a little in the clay. #ceramics

It has all to do with oxygen. With this kiln there is no way to do a reduced or neutral firing. I'm running an experiment this afternoon that should give me more options.

I have the kiln in cool down mode now. If like yesterday, the cool down will take 7 hours before I can bring it in the house & 9 hours before I can open it at a safe to touch temp.

The 2 beads survived my 1st time ever kiln firing at 900 C.

Here are the Mississippi River clay (top) & Andalusia, Alabama clay (bottom) beads unfired & fired. #ceramics #archaeology
