Tbh Luna was done in from yesterday so probably for the best. Think that might be it for Wainwrights on this trip. At least I NEVER need to do Harter Fell or Green Crag ever again 🙏

Today was meant to be clear and sunny, but it turned out to be clagged in all day. Which formed my decision to have a family day.

Apparently we've been in a temperature inversion which meant the tops were all clear above the clouds. Gutted lol.

Had a day pottering about. Mix of walking, drinking lots of coffees and mooching about towns. Then had a nice dinner 👍

Been very keen to get up since 4am. Zach usually wakes by 5. Sometimes earlier.

Anyway he's fast asleep so I'm trapped in this little camping pod in dire need of a wee 🙏

Made it down by about 5ish. Saw this view of what I think is Scafell Pike
Some mountains across a valley. The central mountain has a layer of cloud cover the top, but the summit peak is just showing through the cloud.

Not going to lie it has been a tough walk. Somehow better than I'd anticipated.

We did our route. Great Worm Crag, Green Crag and Harter Fell. With some extras. Just having a rest on the way down to our accommodation.
A springer spaniel and a cocker spaniel sitting either side of a trig point at the top of a hill under a clear blue autumn sky.

What a boring story that would have been though lol

I'm hoping for a not too exciting time of it for this one. I've driven through this moorland loads. It's so bleak, but I've really wanted to spend time walking on it.

There is only one useful escape route and that involves abandoning the walk at Green Crag and heading into Eskdale. Once I commit to Harter Fell there's no good way out of it. This was my issue last time when going the opposite way. I ALMOST didn't do Green Crag.

This is it. I'm so excited to try this. It's going to be a hard day driving there and then being ejected out of the car onto pathless moorland.

For once my walk actually has a destination instead of going in a huge circle!
A screenshot from the OS Maps app showing a route starting in the lowered left corner taking in fells named Great Worm Crag, Green Crag and Harter Fell

It's a repeat of Green Crag and Harter Fell which saw me almost lost in Hardknott Forest after dark when I last did it.

Trying to plot a route to Eskdale from Birker Fell for tomorrow. Was hoping one would be available, but apparently nobody has made the route that I want available.

It is not a great sign.

Found this on our walk. Been informed that it is a "hare's foot inkcap". Apparently they're very delicate and only last a few hours.
A fungus amongst some green grass. It has a translucent white thin stem with a bowl shaped top on it. Fungus from above looking almost straight down looking inside the bowl shaped cap. It is mostly translucent white but has darker lines moving out radially from the centre to the edges.

Watching the Ed Gein thing and he sounds so much like Derek Zoolander.

Feels like we're having a very dry autumn. I know we had Storm Amy last week, but we've not had much rain otherwise and I'm still wearing shorts to walk the dogs.

Zach is having some cheese on toast. The Cheese on Toast Fan Club has gathered to observe.
A baby sat in a high chair eating some cheese on toast. A springer spaniel and a cocker spaniel are sitting in front of him while watching him.

Decided to start work early. When logged on to the VPN I can't connect to the internet. Shout out to the uni for being fucking shite 👍
arisenjames.bsky.social
Like it can't be THAT difficult.
arisenjames.bsky.social
Just had an overwhelming urge to learn how to build some sort of wooden pergola/covered shelter for the garden.
arisenjames.bsky.social
Awake at 5am, but Heather said she'd like to walk the dogs today 🤷‍♂️
arisenjames.bsky.social
Think my main issue is that the work isn't even difficult. It's just very boring. I'm not some sort of super genius, but I am happiest when reaching for something, not trudging through shite.

They're a rip off for students. The state of academic publishing is a disgrace. Academics are incredibly annoying. Everything I do in this job is a waste of my life to the point that doing NOTHING would be a net benefit for the world.
arisenjames.bsky.social
All this to say, this is a waste of my time. I want to spend work time preparing for certification exams and making my own software so I can leave this fucking stupid university.
arisenjames.bsky.social
Managed to write a script that generates the outputs needed for this translation work.

Afterwards it needs a small amount of manual work, but that's no big deal.

Generating the input files is an absolute nightmare.
arisenjames.bsky.social
At the end I need to slot the old university departments into the new structure. I think this could be sort of automated, but you'd spend the same amount of time just doing it yourself 👎
arisenjames.bsky.social
The only way if getting the input is to carefully go through a webpage clicking links and copying info from the pages into a text file.

If it wasn't for this and the small amount of manual work at the end it could almost be a "click and go" thing.
