Nvidia drivers are usually worse than AMD drivers and the gulf is worse for older cards. They're usually slower and less stable.

You'll probably maintain the majority of your performance most of the time. A quick look at reddit shows that the 970m works fine enough.

Nvidia drivers for linux are suboptimal, but they work fine. The lower overhead on Linux will probably cancel out that issue. YMMV, but considering that windows straight up won't let you upgrade an old PC to 11, linux might be your only choice.

Steam games run very well on Linux. Proton, the compat tool that people use, was made primarily by Valve IIRC. You just can't play things with kernel anticheat.

You will need to reformat your drive, so you'd need some form of cloud storage or external drive to back things up.

Alternatively, you can swap over to Linux. Scary, and annoying, but speaking as someone who finished setting up Linux on their desktop today it's 100% worth it.
