It makes me wonder whether it is worthwhile to cling to halfhearted ideals than to embrace the reality that humans will never transcend their basal desires. Great figures have tried to amend humanity, appealing alternately to their virtues or their vices (sometimes both).

Does the United States have a history of political abuses? Absolutely. No society is immune to it.

Do we find our way back to norms? Usually, but I worry that this time will be a step too far. The great terror of our day is seen as the good example rather than the bad one.

This is the problem with humans in general. We think ourselves above the law when we have the gavel, then cry foul when the gavel is stripped from our hands.

... How convenient is it to avoid prosecuting your pleas before an absent jury? How much simpler is it to manipulate the court of public opinion than it is to persuade them?

I see this on 'both' [viz. 'all'] sides of the political spectrum in the USA, and it upsets me equally regardless...

Too many people in the USA are so convinced of the 'necessity' to execute the law quickly, for various reasons. Most of them argue that the 'condemned' do not deserve justice, which is a very scary argument. How easy is it to condemn a person without hearing their arguments?...

This counterpoint is unreasonable. There are no exceptions. When we execute extrajudicial actions, we have declared that someone is outside the law, and therefore justice does not apply to them. But then, that isn't justice for all then.

...to hear out the allegations of their accusers, and to defend themselves against such. This is (part of) the elements of due process. When a certain population wishes to bypass due process and "execute" the law, they are actually breaking the law. Not just for some, for **all**.

In the United States, we have a pledge of allegiance (to the flag). The very last line includes a poignant statement: "*and justice for all*"

What does that mean, exactly? "Justice for all?"

It means the accused get their day in court, to have their peers hear their case...
