Feel like I should do kind of intro post.

I'm Ava Foxfort, formerly of board game writing, videos and podcasts (and maybe one day again). I did a heel turn into purely tweeting about wrestling for self care reasons. I now play more role playing games than board games but love both.

No it's super helpful. I was getting there but I think I needed confirmation that it was about specific values, rather than percentages, and that clears up what I was confused about.

No idea if it's helping Calvin, who may have only got buried deeper and regretting saying anything.

The most annoying thing is it's not just made up, but it's intentionally made confusing, so people can talk about it like it's all natural. When it's all essentially elaborate dibs. The basic unit of accounting is promises, nothing more. And words are wind.

The other bit is that you are paying the interest out of your 20% so the absolute amount will drop too. (In fact, maybe that's the point. If your investment is failing your money is dropping, and ALSO your interest is cutting into that pot).

It feels really unintuitive to me that the amount you pay increases when the value goes down (because 20% of less is less than 20% of more). But the bank wants to always be at the same amount of risk or it will sell up for you, so the situation doesn't get worse.

A margin call is triggered if the loan agreement says if the house value ever drops below the price you bought, you have to give them more money so the bank doesn't risk losing money if you're forced to sell.

This doesn't happen with mortgages but apparently can with margin accounts.

Okay maybe it's easier if you think of a less imaginary asset than stocks. If you get a mortgage you put down a deposit. So the bank doesn't want to be at risk by more than 20% of the house value. You pay 20% cash, then the bank covers 80% and you owe them that money (plus interest).

Tbf, I have some amount of special interest in accounting and finance terms, and looking into it, it partly doesn't make sense because it's bullshit.

You also know I've been polling too hard because when I caught my finger in the fridge I let out a 'yowwww' in the exact tone and timing appropriate for the general vibe of heartbreaker, which was playing at the time.

God I got stuck on this for a long time. Think I've been polling too hard. In the end plumped for taxi as it had a good sleaze level and a stronger groove.
