The Blackhawks will never change their logo but that doesn’t mean that I can’t say it’s racist… this has made me realize that a lot of ppl genuinely do not think that it’s racist and that a lot of people do not understand what racism is

I love PWHL Barbies and I think the overall effect is positive for getting girls excited about the sport, but a color blind approach makes it seem like racism and systemic inequality isn’t present in the game. Maybe the PWHL Barbie campaign can be paired with more education on women’s hockey history

You can guess where I’m going with the Barbie thing but the slogan “you can be anything” def applies more to white Barbies than black Barbies and celebrates Sarah nurse as a resilient subject. This “color blind” approach weirdly applies to how they were labeled blonde / brunette 🤣 (not white/black)

I was using the PWHL Barbies as a smaller / more obvious case study but yeah the league also upholds it 🤔 but probably the most obvious way to steer the ship is changing how we talk about the history of women’s hockey (telling a complete history and frankly discussing race and racism).
