CRASH!

On this day 11:49am, 11th October 1982, the world watched in horror as the lifting frame dramatically fell into place, having been caught on a misaligned strop. No real damage was done, other than to our nerves!

My favourite trebuchet story is Edward I spending three months building one at Stirling Castle - nicknamed Warwolf - then angrily ordering the garrison back inside when they tried to surrender before he had a chance to use it at them.

Reading Holy Warriors,Jonathan Phillips' excellent history of the crusades, I learn that catapults on the opposing sides at the siege of Acre at the end of the 12th century went by names such as "Bad Neighbour" and "Evil Cousin."

BATTLE OF BRITAIN 85: 11th Oct 1940. At 3:30am, Operation MEDIUM, a bombardment of shipping in Cherbourg harbour, began. In effective coordination with a Bomber Command attack, the veteran battleship HMS Revenge fired 120x15 inch shells, and her escorting destroyers 801x4.7 inch.

#OTD 11/10/1963 #RememberRCN -HMCS HAIDA paid-off, to become floating Memorial in Toronto, ON. The last remaining Tribal Class Destroyer was moved to Hamilton, ON in 2004. Parks Canada

#OTD 11/10/1942 #RememberRCN -SS Waterton (Bowater, NF) sunk by U-106 in the Cabot Strait. A 117 Sqn RCAF Canso was directly overhead when 2nd torp struck, dousing aircraft in water & debris. HMCS VISON made several unsuccessful attacks on U-boat, then rescued all 27 crew.
