The thing about collapse is that you can’t get used to it. The world meets our adaptation with new disappointments as things deteriorate. You can’t even get used to the trend because it’s accelerating. Our growing pessimism isn’t validated, only proved time and again to be insufficient.

Universities considered “the best” (and many others) have transformed themselves into great factories of unlearning, cathedrals to ignorance. This was already the case, to be sure, but Palestine forced the hands of the trustees & donors who don’t want their money undermining their social position.

Palestinian journalist Shadi Abu Seed was one of those released yesterday. He recounted his mistreatment in prison, where he was told that his family had been killed, which he only yesterday discovered was another lie. There are thousands of others with stories like his.

“I went hungry for the past two years. I swear to God, they didn’t feed us. They kept us naked. They beat us while we were naked. Day and night we were tortured. Till our last day in Israeli prison, they cut us and hit us and abused us. We ensured every kind of torture—emotional, and physical. We couldn’t even sleep. They threatened us with our children. They told me they killed my children. They told us that Gaza was destroyed. I arrived here and found that everything was gone. It looked like the end of the world. Everything is different.”

This is why fascists/colonizers are almost never honest about their acts and intentions: they can’t be! Not if they want people to support them. People are not going to forget what a child’s body looks like after run over by a tank, or a child’s face carrying pieces of their parents in plastic bags.

This despite a relentless propaganda campaign on every platform and from every major outlet & institution. This sea change in US politics was unthinkable even 10 years ago, and it’s largely just a matter of education—seeing, in cellphone videos and on social media, what Palestinians actually endure.

Most people are rightly horrified when they learn the real situation in Palestine and are forced to see the human toll of Zionism. They see the Jim Crow South and apartheid South Africa in the daily insults & abuses of occupation, the Third Reich in the obsessive race laws and genocidal bombings.

A Pew Research Center survey last week reported that nearly six out of 10 Americans, 59%, now hold a negative view of Israel, while
39% believe it is "going too far" in its war in Gaza - compared with 31% who held the same view a year ago, and 27% who thought this just two months after the war started. A poll from the same organization in 2022 showed 42% with negative views.
The anti-Israel swing is confirmed by other polls. A recent New York Times/Siena poll showed pro-Palestinians sympathies outscoring support for Israel - albeit narrowly, by 35% to 34%.
An Economist/You Gov poll in August found that 45% of the public believe Israel is committing genocide - a charge Israel vociferously denies - compared with only 31% who disagreed. Woke up after a strange dream with Dispatch’s Two Coins stuck in my head, which I haven’t heard in about a decade. Also had a pet panther, which was cool, probably because Oakland had jumped up on the bed with me in the night.

Few places on Earth darker and bleaker than an “Israeli” prison, if any. Every one an Abu Ghraib, where routine torture—physical and psychological, diabolical in its creativity—and daily humiliation are the rule. Every released prisoner is clear on this, and knows they might’ve stayed forever.

“Israeli” ceasefires only ever apply to the other party. They’ll continue to kill whomever they want, whenever they want until they are stopped. They see themselves as occupying an altogether different moral plane than their enemies, like any colonizer.

We must demand justice for the hundreds of thousands in Gaza’s mass graves or whose broken homes became their tombs. They’ll be finding martyrs under the rubble for years. Whole generations starved and orphaned, traumatized by amputations without anesthesia… a ceasefire doesn’t negate any of that.

Impossible not to be moved by the jubilant scenes of the Palestinians being released, but each of them has stories that freeze the blood—decades lost to the black holes of “Israeli” torture prisons, many returning to find most of their families martyred. Palestine’s liberation has only just begun.

I almost died of secondhand embarrassment watching that Who’s Who of “Who’s That?” lineup of corrupt gasbags polishing each other’s dicks while Trump MC’d like a middle school vice principal thanking donors at a potluck. Our decaying ruling class is just begging to be deposed.

A ceasefire to “Israel” has always meant that the other side ceases its fire while “Israel” remains free to strike wherever, whenever and whomever they wish. Sooner or later, they will try to reestablish this status quo in Gaza, probably while insisting they’re not in violation of this ceasefire.
