Among the states that have conducted voluntary mid-decade redistricting so far, California is the first to adopt a map projected to favor Democrats.
16. Voters approved California Proposition 50. As of 11:23 p.m. EST, the vote was 65% to 35%. The constitutional amendment authorizes a new congressional district map that, based on recent presidential election results, would make five currently Republican-held districts more favorable to Democrats.
15. Democrats retained control of the Virginia House of Delegates, the first time the party retained an existing majority in the chamber’s elections since 1997. Dems also have a majority in the VA Senate & Dem Abigail Spanberger won the gubernatorial race. The state became a Democratic trifecta.
Each amendment received at least 57% of the vote as of 10:45 p.m. EST.
14. Voters in New York City approved Questions 2, 3, and 4, three charter amendments designed to expedite approvals for affordable housing and certain land use changes while removing or limiting the city council’s role in approving some of these projects.
13. Voters approved Colorado Propositions LL and MM, allowing the state to retain excess revenue and further reduce income tax deductions for taxpayers with a federal adjusted gross income above $300,000. Together, the measures increase funding for the Healthy School Meals for All Program.
With its passage, Maine becomes one of 22 states that authorize courts to issue ERPOs. As of 10:34 EST, the vote was 60.4% to 39.6%.
12. Voters approved Maine Question 2, establishing a process for obtaining an Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO), also known as a red-flag law, to temporarily restrict access to weapons “capable of producing death or serious bodily injury.”
As of 10:20 p.m. EST, the vote was 38.6% 'Yes' to 61.4% 'No'.
11. Voters rejected Maine Question 1, a citizen-initiated measure that would have required photo ID to vote and changed absentee and drop box rules. Between 2004 and 2024, voters approved 8 of 10 ballot measures requiring or expanding voter ID.
The last retention elections were held in 2017, when Justices Thomas Saylor (R) and Debra Todd (D) were retained with 68% and 71% support, respectively.
10. Three Pennsylvania Supreme Court justices — Christine Donohue (D), Kevin M. Dougherty (D), and David N. Wecht (D) — were retained in three elections held on November 4, 2025. As of 10:11 p.m. EST, all three justices had over 64% of the vote.
9. Incumbent Lawrence Krasner (D) defeated Patrick F. Dugan (R) in the general election for Philadelphia District Attorney. As of 10:09 p.m. EST, Krasner received 79.2% of the vote to Dugan's 20.8%. Krasner was first elected in 2017 and was re-elected in 2021.
8. Texas voters approved Proposition 16, becoming the 18th state to explicitly prohibit noncitizen voting in state and local elections. As of 9:50 p.m. EST, the margin was 74% to 26%.
7. Texas voters approved Proposition 15, adding parental rights to the state constitution. Texas is one of 26 states that has a Parents’ Bill of Rights in state law. As of 9:45 p.m. EST, the vote margin on the amendment was 70% to 30%.
This election is the first time since 1961 that New Jersey voters have elected a member of the same party for three consecutive gubernatorial terms.
6. Mikie Sherrill (D) defeated Jack Ciattarelli (R) in the race to succeed incumbent Gov. Phil Murphy (D), who was term-limited. As of 9:32 p.m. EST, with 64% of votes in, Sherrill received 57% of the vote to Ciattarelli's 42.4%.
Incumbent Eric Adams (D) ran for re-election as an independent, but withdrew on September 28, though his name remained on the ballot.
Mamdani and Cuomo previously ran in the Democratic primary on June 24, when Mamdani received 56% of the vote to Cuomo's 44% after three rounds of ranked-choice voting.
5. Zohran Mamdani (D) defeated Curtis Sliwa (R) and Andrew Cuomo (I) for mayor of New York. As of 9:37 p.m. EST, Mamdani received 49.9% of the vote to Cuomo's 41.7% and Sliwa's 8.1%.
In Virginia, the governor appoints the secretary of the commonwealth.
Heading into the elections, Republicans held triplex control in Virginia since 2021. A triplex is when one political party holds the governor, attorney general, and secretary of state offices. In the gubernatorial election, Abigail Spanberger (D) defeated Winsome Earle-Sears (R).
4. Jay Jones (D) defeated incumbent Jason Miyares (R) in the general election for Virginia Attorney General. As of 8:42 p.m. EST, with 63% of precincts reporting, Jones received 51.3% to Miyares’ 48.8%. In 2021, Miyares defeated then-incumbent Mark Herring (D) 50.4%-49.6%
Virginia’s Lieutenant Governor presides over its state Senate.

Currently, Democrats have a 21-19 majority in the Virginia Senate. The last Democrat to be elected Lieutenant Governor was Justin Fairfax in 2017.
3. Ghazala Hashmi (D) defeated John Reid (R) in the general election for lieutenant governor of Virginia. Incumbent Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears (R) ran for governor. As of 8:30 p.m. EST, with 57% of the vote in, Hashmi received 53.4% to Reid’s 46.3%.
