At least there was good traction. Avoiding quagmires was key. The erosional features and topography created traps that Must be avoided.

The Great Plains exist in New Mexico as well. Las Vegas, NM is situated like Denver on the east side of the mountains. But there is minimal population on the east side compared to CO.
