Thousands of federal workers at the U.S. Dept. of the Interior and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration were fired earlier this year.

The dangerous effects of these mass firings are coming into focus, but it's not too late to stop this.

Pots set to catch blue crabs kill tens of thousands of imperiled diamondback terrapins every year, but a simple excluder device could pretty much solve the problem.

“It’s cheap, it’s simple, and it could save thousands of turtles,” said the Center’s Tara Zuardo.

“The owners of industrial factory farms don’t want to alert nearby communities about releases of dangerous gases like ammonia and hydrogen sulfide because they don’t want to be held responsible for the brain and lung damage and deaths their emissions can cause,” according to the Center.

A rule lets livestock facilities not report ammonia & hydrogen sulfide pollution. Industry groups say the data is "of no particular value."
But advocates say this data could help communities hold CAFOs responsible for brain & lung damage caused by these emissions.

“Additional protections under state law will give this tiny mouse a better chance at survival. With their habitat constantly under threat, I hope officials will agree that permanent protections are necessary,” said Elizabeth Reid-Wainscoat, a campaigner at the Center.

The decision comes after we petitioned the commission to list the imperiled mouse as threatened or endangered. Our petition notes that the mouse is found only in three locations, with the species’ total occupied habitat estimated at less than 740 acres on the coast of Orange and San Diego counties.

A big win for one of California’s smallest native mammals 🎉

The CA Fish and Game Commission voted unanimously today to declare the Pacific pocket mouse a candidate species under the California ESA, granting protections for them as the state conducts a yearlong review.

"If state lawmakers needed a sign that their bill boosting oil drilling to appease refineries was ill-advised, they got it last Thursday night in the form of towering flames."

It reads: Every time our leaders cave to the volatile, hazardous fossil fuel industry, Californians suffer for it. It’s time to speed the transition to clean energy and get off oil and gas for good.

The county could switch off these lights and use the safer, wildlife-friendly streetlights already installed along the highway. But the county refuses to act — despite depending on sea turtles for tourism. It has also failed to implement beachfront lighting ordinances to protect sea turtles.
biologicaldiversity.org
Besides driving female sea turtles from their nests, the stadium-like lights divert hatchlings from the sea, drawing them inland to become exhausted and die.

Each summer in Glynn County, GA, thousands of imperiled loggerheads struggle across the sand to the ocean for their first swim, but the lights of a nearby highway exit have turned their journey from difficult to deadly.

Every darter has its day 🎉

A legal challenge to a coal hauling permit came to a successful close today. The permit allowed for operations that threatened to endanger candy darters and their critical habitat in West Virginia’s Cherry River watershed.
