Our new report shows how energy and nature goals can be aligned.

It highlights examples from our national Partners, including progress and gaps that slow down biodiversity protection and the rapid renewables expansion.

🚨 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 🚨

This is a critical moment. Several major EU laws – regarding energy transition - are implemented.

The EU is on course for a 54% climate emissions cut by 2030, but none of the specific biodiversity goals are currently on track.

This is an important step forward. Not only for Vjosa Narta, but for protected areas around the world facing similar pressures.

Now, governments around the world must act on this commitment. Together, we can safeguard nature for wildlife, communities, and generations to come.

The motion calls on Albania, which is also an IUCN member, to restore its environmental safeguards and urges all governments to keep their protected areas off-limits to destructive infrastructure.

Earlier this month, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the world’s leading authority on nature conservation, saw more than 98% of its members vote in favour of Motion 130. The global decision reaffirms that protected areas exist for conservation, not mass tourism development.

Instead of safeguarding Albania’s natural heritage, the changed law now puts the private gain of a select few ahead of the common good.

But there is hope.

One of these places is the Vjosa Narta Protected Landscape, a haven for over 200 bird species.

Once safeguarded by law, an international airport is already being constructed in the heart of this irreplaceable area and plans for a 10,000-rooms luxury resort complex are already on the table.
birdlifeeurope.bsky.social
🚨Protected areas are not development zones. 🚨

In 2024, Albania shockingly changed its Protected Areas Law to allow the construction of airports, resorts, and other developments inside protected areas.

This opened the door to projects that threaten some of the country’s most valuable natural sites.

The EU’s forests are vital for our #Climate and #Biodiversity goals 🌲

Efforts by Finland & Sweden to weaken the #LULUCF Regulation threaten this progress.🚫

Joined by international NGOs, we stand up for strong, science-based climate policy.

But large-scale restoration needs strong political backing. People want to hashtag#restorenature and our Partners can make it happen in the field. So, let’s make it happen. 💪

his law was that adopted in 2024 and aims to restore at least 20 % of the EU’s land and sea areas by 2030 and repair all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050.

Even more encouraging: three quarters of people say that politicians must do more to make nature restoration a reality.

We have reassessed 1,360 bird species. Out of the 11,185 species assessed worldwide:

⚠️11.5% are globally threatened.

📉61% have declining populations.

But restoring habitats will help put these species on a path to recovery.🌱

🐦 Last week, our annual Fundraising Working Group meeting took place in Zrenjanin, hosted by our partner, the Bird Protection and Study Society of Serbia!

During the meeting, our partners were able to improve everyone’s fundraising skills and also got to visit Serbia’s largest wetland, Carska Bara.

Food concerns everyone, and so do the rules that protect it. If the EU rolls back food and pesticide laws, we all lose: our health, nature, clean water.

We built these protections together over time. Now let’s defend them.

Marilda Dhaskali, Senior Agriculture and Land-use Policy Officer, BirdLife Europe: “Today the EU parliament chose, once again, to set farming and farmers up for total failure. We call on Member States and the European Commission to immediately stop this dangerous rollback for nature."
birdlifeeurope.bsky.social
- 𝗨𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 by pushing through yet another round of hasty and unclear changes.

- At a time of record fires and droughts, we should be helping farmers to adapt to the climate crisis and work with nature, not gutting the very rules that protect it.
birdlifeeurope.bsky.social
Why?
- 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 for polluting and destructive farming practices to operate in the heart of protected areas.,

- 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗘𝗨 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗶𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 by removing the obligation to take measures against soil erosion.
birdlifeeurope.bsky.social
We don’t need less rules, we need to focus on properly implementing the rules we have and support farmers that are acting for nature.

This vote is irresponsible and a dangerous step backward for Europe’s environment, climate, and food security.
