One other thing you can try is in Steam game Properties, go to the Betas tab and switch to the "default_previous" branch to see if that one works for you.

I'd suggest first making sure your files are good. Under the game Properties in Steam, go to Installed Files tab, then select "Verify integrity of game files". You can also check in My Documents\Chasm for a crashlog.txt that should have more info about the error.
