So my new year's resolution is:
Read 100 books.
Given the state of my Kindle half of those could be just finishing unfinished ones.
bjornfr.bsky.social
Books read:
2018: 145
2019: 107
2020: 92
2021: 37
2022: 61
2023: 30
2024: 36.

All the yikes. And a new year's resolution decided. For a start just finishing up the half read books should get me to '23 in about a month....

I have no doubt it helps. Every little does.
My stance on UBI simplified even further is that is a fabulous idea, needs livable wage, will be unbelievably difficult to finance and will be an absolute necessity in anywhere from 20 to 50 years from now.
But first: free (ish) healthcare

Anyway, I've just clicked on your bio and I'll certainly have a good look.
Especially any calculations involving livable wage UBI, taxation needed, and where savings are to made but cutting programs made unnecessary by UBI. If I'm persuaded I shall be pleasantly surprised.

I think I've seen NIT mentioned but I've certainly not thought about it at all
I stand by what I said. UBI does nothing to fix the health care problem in the US for example. Start there.

Not in a country as defined above.

Inexplicably. Utterly.

Mjög fínt loft hér á læknavaktinni.
Fylgir reyndar að hér er svona 14° hiti...

A priority for a country not falling under the definition in 1 should be to be a country falling under the definition in 1

Any UBI which replaces all other government support must be on a livable wage scale.

The taxing needed for this is... Vig

If a UBI in a country as above is not a replacement but a much smaller amount than livable wage it is probably still not worth the extensive tax needed.

2/3

Here is my takes on UBI without the nuance of my actual stance
In a country with extensive mostly free healthcare, actual payments to people unable to work for health reasons and other financial support, UBI which is supposed to replace all such payments is damaging 1/3

Oh and if you want courage I read the Dune books at around the same time. In reverse order mostly iirc. Starting with chapterhouse.

Also, I had no clue who Terry was at the time and hadn't heard anything about him.

I was a different man those thirty odd years ago

It was what was in at the moment in the library
And it doesn't say on the cover of TLF it's a part two...

I remember the first movie I saw that relied on this *after* mobiles were ubiquitous enough.
That was Unbreakable in 2000.

And I absolutely trusted Francis to be right!
bjornfr.bsky.social
Oh yeah that one has *never* left my mind!
bjornfr.bsky.social
Oh yeah absolutely. Remember that now
(in my defence it is two AM 😂

Indeed! No judgement is involved. I was just a teenager trying to get to grips with a second language and being annoyed at this one thing I was stumbling on

She had a pilot's licence and ran an air taxi.
If one had had a little more intuition one could have gone "oh Mary has a new hobby" regularly!
bjornfr.bsky.social
Yes. However in Icelandic we either specify very clearly the relation (mother's brother, sons of sisters for uncle, cousins) or completely generic (male relative) and one's aunt by marriage is "woman who is married to my father's sister" (swidt?)
I did figure it out but I still don't use it.
bjornfr.bsky.social
I came to them in the early 80s and was mostly OK with the aging of the the earliest ones

The bit that really threw me was the use of "uncle" for uncle-by-marriage :)
bjornfr.bsky.social
And the reason they did change is the one of the reasons they should be by "Dick and Mary Francis"
I like to think the e-organiser in Straight is Mary, it's more probably Felix.

I started with TLF and was utterly meh.
Thankfully I gave G!G! a chance a few months later.
