None of this criticism is an endorsement of any candidate mayor. Honestly, they're all terrible. From what I've seen, they all have concepts of plans that will do little to address the problems. I doubt any of them will pressure the state or Port Authority for improved bus and PATH service.

Jersey City is approx 14 sq mi. and there is also the PATH train with stops at Journal Square, Grove St., Newport, and Exchange Place (and stops in Manhattan). Oh yeah, there's also a NJ Transit lightrail that serves parts of the city.

Jersey City already has "micro transit" with Via (a ride-sharing service that is subsidized by the city) that costs $2 for most rides. The city council approved a new 2-yr contract with Via in August for $15.43 million.

This means that Jersey City would have to buy its own buses and hire drivers before implementing a free ride plan. That is not an insignificant expense.

First, Mamdani in NYC can influence the MTA because it is a CITY agency. Buses in Jersey City are owned and operated by NJ Transit, which is a state agency. Jersey City has no buses of its own (unless you count independent jitney buses that go to/from Port Authority).
