This is a depressing explanation of the place Evangelical National Christianity has in American society. We see signs of similar here in Australia but they, so far, remain largely on the fringe. However the natural apathy of Australians may well allow it to grow and threaten us all.

Australia, like all other countries, shows an inability to present our history “warts and all”. We tidy it up, we downplay our own treachery to others and our support of either actual or almost slavery. We create heroes and imbue them with motives they never had. Our “history” is largely a fraud.

So where are the marches in support of anti-poverty efforts in Australia? Where are the public forums demanding action by government? I see none of these so my assumption is the vast majority of us don’t give a damn about the poor except to complain about the homeless.

Putting Babet and Thorpe into the one thought process, indicates the need for media consumers to be permanently titillated by controversy. We, the public, determine what is consumed as “news” and we constantly let ourselves down by settling for rubbish.

We may well end up, in the 2050’s, with a number of superseded, tactically useless, underwater craft and an economy stripped bare to pay for them. And both our major parties will have got us there.
Look long and carefully at independents in your electorate and mobilise behind them.
