English Common Law eventually eliminated entailed estates where only the eldest male inherits, but not before fighting crusades and staging repeated genocides over it.

Wealth disparity, and inherited wealth especially, messes up any chances of building a meritocracy.

It insulates potentially less meritorious candidates against their failures, while denying opportunity to impoverished candidates.
