For Face the Music, Laura Bailey didn’t want me to use her old portrait — she thought it made her look too young. We shot again… but she hadn’t aged a day in the ten years since.
Met Mike Mills (R.E.M.) through designer Manuel. Got to know him since – exhibitions, LA visits. If you watch R.E.M. shows, you’ll see Manuel’s rhinestone suits on Mike. Same Manuel who dressed The Beatles, Elvis, Madonna, Gaga, The Killers, White Stripes.
Helen – so unfair and untimely. Your wit, brilliance, and beauty lit up every gathering. I’ll remember double-decker bus dinners, Isle of Wight holidays, our Welsh roots, and the genius you brought to every shoot. With love.
On set for The Naked Civil Servant – John Hurt as Quentin Crisp as Elizabeth I. I’d already photographed Quentin in NYC and John in London. Not the only time I’ve shot someone playing someone else I’ve shot. Any guesses?
Turn up to shoot Cerys Matthews and magic happens. These portraits were taken in her front room – no studio could have made them better. Music, beauty, talent. Diolch, Cerys.
