We spoke to Nathan Jubb, a fly fishing guide who's fished the Wye for 45 years. He describes the change he's seen in the river + the impact on fish:

The salmon population of the Wye is in collapse, and Atlantic salmon are now endangered in the UK. Those bringing the court case argue the needs of intensive farming cannot be permitted to outweigh the needs of fish, wildlife + river users.

A lone and probably invisible Pink Footed Goose gives the “where is everybody?” call as it heads east over Wells Harbour this morning (don’t worry it was heading for N Point and lots of friends). @themarshtit.bsky.social @btobirds.bsky.social

John Thornhill gets it about right: "the quest for artificial general intelligence" is "the unfathomable in pursuit of the indefinable".

Goniatite fossils packed throughout this piece of shale. The shells of these ancient relatives of Squid and Octopus must have littered the sea floor that covered this part of the earths surface over 300 million years ago.

Great article from @hannahritchie.bsky.social… and the EU ETS can fund action to reduce these non-CO2 climate impacts from aviation (and from shipping - where black carbon has a GWP of 900). It’s really good that this is getting more public attention

I know statistics are poorly understood and are misused. But facts matter

Between the 1991, 2001, 2011 and 2021 Census *every* ethnic group in the UK has become *less* geographically segregated and *all* groups, majority and minorities, are more likely to interact with people not like them

I got this wrong. Beaver Moon is in November. Hunters Moon or Harvest Moon tonight … but didn’t see any hunters either. Will watch out for beavers next month.

Technically this is the Beaver Moon tonight but I suspect it also works for Hedgehogs? Neither seen in Wells Harbour this evening.

Tropical Storm #Jerry formed Tuesday, expected to turn north before reaching the Caribbean.

An October storm isn’t unusual...but the ocean heat feeding it is.

So far, Jerry’s traveled over above-average warmth made 10x–20x more likely by human-caused climate change.

Wells next the Sea Harbour with the Beaver Moon tonight. Didn’t see any beavers but to be fair I don’t think they like salt water.

Plus a flock of Pinks flew by oinking across the moon but at that point I was in between trying to take video ... it was nice anyway.

This is not a surprise to anyone on Bluesky. "A survey of more than 500 political scientists finds that the vast majority think the United States is moving swiftly from liberal democracy toward some form of authoritarianism." www.npr.org/2025/04/22/n...
Hundreds of scholars say U.S. is swiftly heading toward authoritarianism
Most — but not all — political scientists are deeply troubled by the president's attempts to expand executive power, according to a national survey.
