After feedback from a vocal group of residents, the project will now move forward with unprotected bike lanes. These will do little to keep cyclists safe because there is no protection between them and fast-moving traffic. It's a shame to see Councilmember Kerr prioritize street parking over safety.
Last year, Long Beach Public Works recommended reconfiguring a portion of Orange Ave with a 2-way protected cycle track, with parking on one side of the street and preserving the center turn lane.
We are disappointed to learn that Councilmember Kerr has downgraded the Orange Ave Backbone bikeway from a protected bikeway to unprotected bike lanes in the door zone.
