Did you travel or did you read?

Love the logo on the pants. Is that a brand or did you stitch it on?

I see. So we'll be like a Republican maniple.

I'll be amongst the light-armed "skirmishers" (*velites*), and then we'll bring in the heavy infantry, in order: *hastati* (Jinyu), *principes* (Tony), and *triarii* (Nicholas).

Brilliant tactics!

Lineup falls off a bit at the end, but otherwise very strong.

The mix of late-arriving and early-departing Dodgers fans and non-serious celebrity Lakers fans.

But you are living proof, Christina, that it's possible—just barely possible—to be a Boston *and* LA sports fan and not be an *entirely* terrible person.

You're venturing into dangerous waters, Andrew. Please be cautious.

Wonder what it was like when the Celtics were dominant. My sense is that entitlement arose with the successes of the Patriots and esp. Red Sox. But ooh boy. I do think that run of championships in both sports produced the most insufferable fan base of all (with the Bay Area right up there!).

Son and I are big Giants fans. A couple of years ago, we took a trip to New York that happened to coincide with Opening Day. So we went. I tried to warn him that East Coast was a different beast. He didn't buy it.

Fans were screaming F-bombs *at the Yankees* IN THE 1ST INNING. He learned quickly. 😂

Ah, I'm speaking to a Philly guy!
carlosfnorena.bsky.social
Lol. But the Philly people have made an ART of their unhingedness!

(which I kinda loved: lived there for 6 years, 1995-2001, when the sports scene was wild across all 4 pro sports)

A typology of major US sports fan bases, by dominant characteristic:

NO NONSENSE: New York

ENTITLED: Boston

UNHINGED: Philadelphia

WHOLESOME: Chicago

DESPERATE: Detroit

SAD: Cleveland

FAIR-WEATHERED: Miami

ARROGANT: Dallas

FLAKY: Los Angeles

SUPERIORITY COMPLEX: SF

ANNOYING: Seattle

It's a bizarro matchup, yes. I love it.

I think I'll root for Toronto.

I kinda like the Mariners, and I love the city of Seattle, but Seattle has one of those sneaky annoying fan bases (not as obviously bad as, say, Boston or Dallas or Los Angeles, of course, all of which are simply intolerable).

The baseball gods are punishing me for my hubris. I'm either going to be wrong or the Dodgers are going to win (which is obviously much worse).

Five teams are capable of winning the 2025 World Series. In order:

Dodgers
Padres
Phillies
Tigers
Mets

That's it. The rest are out.

Amy Norgard and Joshua Nudell -- in the first part of a two-part series -- explore the deep roots of our thinking about the nature of human relationships with artifical companions, stretching from Hollywood to Ovid and back again.

Great reflections on classical reception here!

I only needed 10 minutes, Dr. D.
carlosfnorena.bsky.social
That's a great question! I've never bothered to check!

I like the little green and red ones. I only ever read the left-hand side, though. Just FYI.
