Today is the 112th anniversary of the Senghenydd colliery disaster.

The blast on October 14, 1913, killed 439 men and boys, with another dying during rescue operations. It was, and remains, the worst coal mining disaster in British history and also the sixth worst in the world.

The Norse settlements were once dismissed as myths, then they found the archaeological evidence of the settlements. Is the tale of Madoc true? Who knows. However the Cherokee have claimed to have fought us out of what is now Tennessee.

Yep, read up on the Welsh explorer John Evans. Lewis & Clark used some of his maps.

John never found any trace of Welsh-Indians, but that always seemed rather far fetched.

You have to wonder though if they did make it here.

It’s thought that the Welsh would have used similar boats. Which is not unreasonable given the trade routes between Celts and the Norse were long established by that point.

Fertile fishing grounds, this continent would have been pretty well known among sailors I would imagine. The Norse were here a good 500 years before Columbus, there is evidence of contact between Egypt and South America almost 3,000 years ago. The Polynesians definitely were here long ago.
chicagotafia.bsky.social
No doubt the Norse made it here, there is clear archaeological evidence. However the Welsh myths are backed up by Cherokee oral traditions, they claim to have fought us in what is now Tennessee. The Norse settlements were dismissed as myths not too long ago.
chicagotafia.bsky.social
When did the Norse cease to be European 😂 yeah Leif & co made it here 200 years before the Welsh, but the Welsh made it here 300 years before before that pretentious Italian peacock Columbus 😂

Both used bull skin boats, and some words are similar in both languages. No tangible evidence of course, but you have to wonder.

You had to walk in Madoc’s shoes to see what he went through.

People thought the world was flat, for crying out loud.

Then he lands in Alabama with a bunch of naked savages.

That took a lot of guts.

A zombie film made and set in South Wales from 2015!

As a horror film affectionado, and a zombie movie junkie, I am a bit horrified that this flew under my radar for so long.

Is it great? No! Is it amusing enough? Yes!

It’s free on Prime Video in the USA.

Prince Madoc (or Madog ab Owain Gwynedd) was a Welsh prince who, according to folklore, sailed across the Atlantic in 1170, more than 300 years before Columbus.
