I draw weird furries, bad guys, & other stuff. Mostly SFW, sometimes a boob. Lately it's been a lotta rabbits. 💎 https://chocodile.storenvy.com/ 🐰 https://chocodile.net/amaranthine/ 🍰 https://chocodile.tumblr.com Personal: @chocodile-reposts.bsky.social

Let me introduce you to my game, Wishbone!

It's a wild west char drama/farming sim! Wishbone may seem sleepy & mundane at first, but there’s trouble brewing: a lawman/outlaws conflict that'll decide the fate of the town itself.

Huh, interesting! I didn't see where that happened, is there some sort of fandom-drama writeup somewhere I could rubberneck? It sounds delightfully cringeworthy.

Furries are good at sensing when someone is being inauthentic & looking to exploit, IMO--being genuine gets you further.
chocodile.net
Absolutely. Speaking of going strong--good to see you still around! Always heartening to see old names I recognize.

PS: My wife & I both still use those watercolor paper textures downloaded from your DA back in 2008. Those things have saved countless artists countless times over the last 17 years!

Go for it! First time I went to a furry con I felt similar. Seeing how excited people get and all the cool art on display (not just vendors but fursuits, badges, people proudly displaying their beloved fursona/OC) melts away feelings of isolation and anxiety IMO. It's a great energy.

Feeling this. The state of the world gets me down, but having a convention to look forward to or getting to share my art with the community and interact with other creatives & weirdos all over the globe is a bright shining light.
chocodile.net
Yep. Much has been written about the overt sexuality of furry from both supportive and critical angles over the years, but I don't think anyone can deny that it's the #1 thing protecting us from takeover by soulless profit-extracting corpos.
chocodile.net
Absolutely. I've gone through periods of being put out with the fandom (like when I was young & found out an artist I liked was, uh... VERY BAD), but there's really nothing else like it. Being creative can feel tough right now but furries offer warmth, support, & camaraderie across generations.
chocodile.net
Ahhh that's awesome! Glad you're gonna get some good use out of that shirt! :D
chocodile.net
Absolutely, 100%. The "furries run everything" bit may have started as a joke but it really is true these days--I know a good number of 'em in tech.
chocodile.net
Yep I do think that furries can kinda sniff it out if you look down on them and just want easy money--reputation in the fandom & 'having a name' are valuable, so if you treat them like they're dirty and don't bother to make any connections you won't do as well, generally.
chocodile.net
Yep, commissions from furries have saved many people I know from eviction and helped them eat and stay housed during tough times between jobs. And despite the economic hardship, I haven't even noticed much of a decrease in sales at conventions. Art & community are king in that fandom, it's awesome.
chocodile.net
Absolutely! When I used to undercharge, furries asked me to enable tips on my invoices, & after I did I found they regularly would tip $5-$20--helped me value my work more and shed guilt over thinking my work wasn't "good enough".

Now I'm in the commissioner seat & do the same to other artists. :)
chocodile.net
Exactly! I (almost) never feel guilty buying big comms cuz I know it'll go into the hands of someone who really needs it. Much better than buying something from a big company!
chocodile.net
Yeah, furries tend to be very experienced commissioners and have a great understanding of the process, on average. I think true normies are the worst commissioners because they don't understand the nature of handmade work & revisions & don't appreciate what a good deal they're getting. :I
chocodile.net
The "last bastion" bit is something I've been thinking about a lot lately. Furry has problems, sure, but it's heartening to see them rally to defend art & support artists. The whole community--fursonas, fursuits, cons, comms, comics, & even the NSFW side is about creative collaboration & connection.
chocodile.net
I think it's worth learning! My wife never drew furry chars before we started working on a story together that took place in a furry setting, but she picked it up very fast. I like both human & furry chars roughly equally, but the furry community is much stronger and more passionate.
chocodile.net
I love amateur art, especially when it's personal & weird-there's an awesome rawness to it.

Some of my fav pieces I've gotten were things where someone drew my char, then drew 'em again years later showing their own art evolution--that's SO incredibly cool IMO. You become part of someone's history.
chocodile.net
Oh awesome! Glad it arrived safe and sound, enjoy your shirt! :D
chocodile.net
Yep, I've been on both sides of the "starving artist selling commissions" deal and am currently enjoying being able to give back to the community that helped me out when I was younger. It can be such a vital lifeline, esp. to peeps who can't survive off "normal" jobs for whatever reason.
chocodile.net
Exactly--it always baffles me when folks say having a selfie for an avatar is a trustworthy indicator of humanity... no, that says bot to me! The guy w/ dozens of pics of the same blue fox w/ anime hair is the real one.

(Wouldn't diss OCs tho, them & their stories can be decade-spanning fixations!)
chocodile.net
Yep, the OC thing is what really makes it irreplaceable & golden. Some other peeps in the comments brought up AI, but this wasn't even about that--it genuinely didn't cross my mind because it's incapable of participating in art stuff I care about (characters, stories, and the related community).
chocodile.net
The most pressing thing, to me, is vocal engagement with art, stories, characters--I'm super grateful to everyone (European or otherwise!) who partakes in that vital human connection.
chocodile.net
And there's nothing wrong with NSFW art of course, but the problem is that communities supporting other types of art & creative-social activities--webcomics, roleplay, worldbuilding--died off. Diversity suffers when you can't find your people & art suffers when you're not making it for yourself. :(
chocodile.net
I feel the increasing focus on sex is part of the general commodification of art--it's no longer by & for weirdos & creatives, it's now just "content" to the incurious masses--gotta be Instagrammable, gotta be able to jack off to it, gotta be "literally me." Otherwise it's invisible, it's nothing.
