ROCKETEER ROCKET PACK RESTORATION
Pt 1 - The Unboxing. Some occasional videos on the restoration of The Rocketeer rocket pack original pattern that I restored. This is the day I received it from its owner.

Bulldozer for the stop-motion animation movie Wendell and Wild. I did most of the cab on top inside and out. Photos show some of the steps of fabrication.   Also included is a photo of the director Henry Sellick checking out one of the dozers.

Miniature Sphinx for the movie Megiddo: Omega Code 2. A cheesy movie but some fun miniature effects. Pics show us making it and then assembling on set. Aside from general assembly, I made the Dream Stele tablet between the Sphinx legs. Scott Schneider pictured.

Buildings for the alien planet city miniature made for the Coneheads movie. I made a bunch of buildings, big and small for the cityscape. The designs were loosely based on Lebbeus Woods designs of architecture. I had a lot of freedom to design and build what I wanted to.

The shooting minis for United Airlines commercial. The motion-controlled whale and interior of the plane, on set with Terry Wendell, director. Boss Films. One of my early jobs. I made patterns for arm rests, foot rails & consoles. And molding and casting dozens of parts for final assembly. #wip
Rare promo item for the The Boxtrolls. I remain very proud of the work the model crew did on this movie. As head of the Model Shop for it, I oversaw the creation of over 20,000 individual pieces for the movies stop-motion sets. A record that has yet to be broken.

Photos of the bridge of the Nightingale 229 miniature for the movie Supernova. This model was 19' in length overall. Here are some photos of creating it. I was involved with a lot of the detail work. This was done at Digital Domain in 1998 & 1999.

Rare pics of the alien puppet from Alien3. Taken by Scott Schneider. He took these at Stetson Visual Services just after the puppet was painted by Ron Gress.  Done as a side job to what he was working on at SVSI - Honey, I Blew Up the Kid. Van was made for that movie. #alien3 #alien #puppet #vanlife
2 scales of oil rigs made for the movie On Deadly Ground. This 1st smaller 1 was for the beauty shots. The larger model was for pyro and explosions. On both, I made the stairwell, elevators and piping and tiny guages throughout than I care to remember. #miniaturesrule
Interesting to see where things I made end up. Here is a the power loader made for a Direct TV ad. It was for closeup shots of Ripley and the alien. I made the flame welder. It is currently on auction at the Propstore. Stan Winston Studios 2007 #aliens #propmaker #sigourneyweaver
Jim Lovell, 1928 to 2025. Apollo 13 Mission Commander. Apollo 13 remains one of my favorite films to have worked on. I worked on the launch tower & service module. Final paint/burn effects on the capsule are my work and damage to the module. That landed me in an issue of Cinefex magazine.

This is for a Giorgio Wings perfume commercial back in 1993. This is the art deco style building seen prominently in the commercial. I made the art deco defining features, including the pyramid top. This was one element in a series of pieces for the ad. Made at Grant McCune Design. #artdeco
Some miniature pieces I made for the stop-motion movie Kubo and the Two Strings. Nearly everything had a fine paper texture applied to it as part of the movies overall style. In order. Beetle using bow and arrows I made. Travel Box. Raft from movie opening. Raft made shelf. Laika 2015. #stopmotion
Filthy Whore from the movie Cabin Boy. We built 2 different scales. I made a bunch of various items throughout the deck. The way it was shot, you never saw much. Important to have people making the decisions know how to shoot models. A world unto itself. Not for amateurs. #vfx #miniaturesrule
I made covers/masks from thin vacuum formed styrene plastic.
The entire thing was hand sculpted originally. Even the eyeballs. They are slightly different in shape from each other. So I wanted to be sure in the orientation. 😁
Work in progress on this little feller from Mars Attacks. Eyes are covered with a mask so I don't mess up the white eye balls. Pupils are a water slide transfer I made. Lotsa layers of paint for the head to look right. Slow and steady.

It's a photographic chemical process. Positive image is laid down on the metal. Then submerged in an acid bath. U protected areas are eaten away. Rinse and use. Many metals can be etch, partly or all the way through.
The steps I took to fabricate the center of the alien craft that breaks through the snow & ice of Antarctica in the movie The X-Files. A light effect based around piping of various diameters and lots of brass etched metal. Last pic - the finished miniature, 5' in diameter. VIFX in 1998. #thexfiles
I start with Tamiya fine primer. Then I airbrush with Golden Brand and Winsor & Newton liquid acrylics. Layer by layer. I build it up and go back and redo areas. Takes a bit of time, but the results are worth it.
Work in progress on this little feller from Mars Attacks. Very happy to get my hands on this one. Starting the paint now. Eyes are covered with a mask so I don't mess up the white eye balls. Slow and steady.

Ennis House made in 1925. The largest of the 4 textile block houses made by Frank Lloyd Wright. I managed a copy of it from The Rocketeer prod mold, pic 3. I will be cleaning it up and displaying it. Pic 4 actual block. I invited to the home in 2007 for a preservation event. #rocketeer #bladerunner
Vid of the Bronco miniature made for the movie Deja Vu. 1/6th scale. It was the SUV that drives off the end of the ferry. We had the chrome work done by Artcraft Plating. We used existing Bronc kits and did the heavy modifications on that. The bullet hits were fun to make. #vfx #fordbronco #chrome
