Perhaps in the Rockies, these birds are as common as seagulls and pigeons, but it totally made my day to see these birds up close. And in a random stroke of luck, I actually decided to bring my 70-300mm lens with me, so I was able to really zoom in and catch them posing for me.
Canada Jay, you made my day! 🥰

On a little hike near Dillon, CO, we took a break by a pond and noticed several cute little Canada Jays watching us at a very close distance waiting to search for random food scraps after we left.
And I hate to have to say it, but I need to confirm that this is a real photo of a real place; this is not AI-generated garbage. (If it was, there would be a 3-mile wide tornado in the background.)
In search of Queen Victoria! (Bryce Canyon National Park) This photo stuck out to me as an inviting composition on a lovely cloud day along the Queen's Garden and its amazing sandstone formations.

So if this image gives you a wee bit of joy, that would make me happy. And please don't stop caring for other people. Compassion and empathy are what make us human and I feel sorry for anybody who takes joy in seeing others in unnecessary pain, as if that's going to make their world better.
Sidenote: With everything going on in the world, I'm finding it really hard to post photos these days. It seems shallow and pointless, but a good friend of mine reminded me that it's important to keep doing what you love and sharing it with others.
A sunny day at Inspiration Point, but the snow squall is coming in fast!

The sky was cloudy so I wasn't expecting much, but the sun managed to break through for a few moments to light up the horizon with a fireball glow! Simply magical. I wish I could take in more mornings like this.
Winter sunrise in Bryce Canyon! What a wonderful experience to get up early and be rewarded with such a view.

This is not a tourist destination spot in Zion National Park and I should have known that a 10-mile hike in crunchy collapsing snow would be more difficult than fun. But it was still amazing to see some beautiful remote scenery and have the whole place to myself.
A few days after a big storm, I thought it would be fun to check out Hop Valley with a blanket of snow.

It's been a very dry winter in the greater Zion area this year, but last year, I had the incredible fortune of hiking Angels Landing during the "atmospheric river" snowstorm that blanketed the area in a foot of the white stuff.

Angels Landing Snowstorm Hike - CitrusMilo Adventures
Hiking Angels Landing during a winter snowstorm is a thrilling and photogenic experience, but it is not recommended for casual tourists visiting Zion National Park.

It gets better, but it does indeed take time. Sometimes you're going to be stuck in that dark place and you're going to have to find the strength to survive and ride it out.

The icy volcano formation at Ash Cave! Hocking Hills in winter is beautiful. (I took this on a mostly cloudy day and was lucky to have the sun pop just a bit to light up the sandstone in the background.)

A few days at 0 degrees F make the waterfalls freeze over and a temporary secret wonderland is formed. I just want to crawl back in here and hide from the world's problems...

A lovely winter view along the Bear River in Petoskey, Michigan. Morning walks in the cold are the best; so calm and peaceful.

While you can create this trick in reality by using two middle bars to confuse the eyes, Lego was harder since the dots and strict angles give it away, so I did have to do a double exposure blending the front middle bar with the back middle bar. This is not AI imagery.
TMI: For tonight's lighthearted #throwbackthursday post, this is a classic little optical illusion that I recreated in Lego. If you don't get it at first, stare at it for a bit and the paradox will eventually jump out at you.

Post a pic you took with no description to bring some zen to the timeline.
Over the holidays, I got a chance to dig through some piles of images that have been waiting to see the light of day. This shot is of my buddy Scott on the 260-ft rappel into Englestead Hollow, an anxiety-inducing spot in Zion that lives rent-free in my head. 😂

Happy Winter Solstice! To mark the official start of winter, I thought I would share summer-winter comparison shots from the top of Angels Landing. Have a great holiday and see you all in 2025!!!
