Fighting book bans is about way more than just giving queer kids something to read that they can relate to.

Queer books save lives.

While I still struggle any time I have to come out because of past trauma, I'm lucky. I wasn't kicked out, my "therapy" was all talk and no physical abuse, and I found resources that helped me unlearn the lies I had been taught. Not everyone is so fortunate.

Not everyone survives.

Growing up, everything I was allowed to listen to, watch, and read had to be Christian. But that opened the door to reading about LGBT affirming Christians.

After that, reading stories where queer people loved and accepted themselves and were loved and accepted by others gave me hope.

My parents constantly lamented about all they were doing for me now and all the money they had spent raising me and dealing with my health issues.

I felt like a burden.

My mom bombarded me with everything about how teens with my "affliction" could change and grow to live normal heterosexual lives, which was the only way to be happy.

My dad blamed himself for my "gender confusion" by not being around enough or maybe once showing a girly emotion like sadness.

I was sent to therapy to "fix" me, though the only promise they made was to keep my "struggle" a secret so my parents wouldn't be kicked out of church.

I was treated like I had a transmissible disease that had to be kept a secret lest I scare anyone.

Like far too many kids, I was raised to believe that being anything but cis and straight is a sin. This teaching taught me to hate myself and taught others to bully me just for suspecting what I didn't even know yet.

And, when I did know, these were the kinds of things I was given to read...

While the dad who raised Nix baked him a rainbow cake when he came out, when Nix comes out to his biological father, that leads to a fight because his father wants him to be with a girl so they can produce biological children.

Definitely. I was raised to believe being anything but cis and straight is a sinful choice and that others making me suffer for being different was my fault. Reading stories where queer people were fully accepted by others and themselves was revolutionary.

I heard that a lot of hashtags weren't working recently, not just this one, but I checked and it seems fine now, so maybe it was fixed?

#QueerPrompts October 9: Curses or bad luck in story?

Nix thinks he has bad luck. After all, every guy rejects him and he keeps falling down and breaking technology.

But then he discovers being rejected led him to Max, he always falls toward Max, and he breaks technology because he's magic. ✨💚

Gale is this chill, laid back biker chick who never really gets upset about anything.

Tien is her opposite, always getting annoyed, but still just as caring as Gale, who naturally she falls for.

When making the character cards, I had to come up with weaknesses for everyone and his jokes making his students groan and facepalm are definitely a weakness for his respect factor. 😂

#QueerPrompts 10/7: National Inner Beauty Day: Does your story address outer vs inner beauty?

Both Nix and Max are insecure about their appearances, but only Max works out to change his. As they discover they're each other's perfect type physically, it goes far beyond that.

As Max says in the end:
“Besides, I know who you are. You’re the sun to my earth and the light I want to open my eyes to every morning for the rest of my life. Even when you’re old and gray and cranky all the time…” He chuckles. “…you’ll always be my soulmate.”
