This is what community care looks like! Our purifier is helping @cleanairclub.bsky.social keep the air clean for artists and organizers across Chicago.

“…in the most pronounced part of my vocal loss…I could not listen to beautiful voices. The ache that I felt listening to singers sing was…it felt like having my heart shattered over & over, every day.”

as someone who also lost musical ability to chronic illness, this pain is why i center mitigation
It was unlike any flu I've ever had. It was unlike anything else I had ever experienced. And in the weeks that followed, there was this external chaos of all of us trying to understand what was happening with the pandemic, and externally, our world was becoming very strange to us. And within my own body, that experience of strangeness was also very present. My voice changed dramatically. It started to shake. The top half of my range became inaccessible, and I began to feel like a stranger in my own body as well.

Air purifiers become less effective the more their filters become clogged with the crap they pull out of the air.

We highly recommend reading up on the signs that it's time to replace the interior filters ⬇️

The idea that acknowledging a threat automatically makes you "afraid" is one of the most annoying conflations that "Covid is over" people make.

"It’s clear that not all of us are paying equally for the risks taken by some; those of us with Long COVID have to pay with our health, bodies, careers, dreams, savings, and futures for the nights out and indoor dining of those who are still abled."

Good point, thank you!

Re mask bans: sunglasses conceal people's identity more effectively than masks do, but everyone would object to a sunglasses ban.

The difference is that sunglasses are completely normalized accessibility devices, while masks have been pathologized as part of the total erasure of the pandemic.
cleanairclub.bsky.social
Re. the Columbia mask ban: imagine how absurd it would be for them to ban sunglasses worn "to conceal identity" but not "for medical reasons."

How could that even be enforceable? Who determines intent? What would count as a medical reason?

It's so important to prioritize schools that have poor air quality due to environmental racism!

The closer schools are to highways, which historically run through neighborhoods of color, the worse the air. Air purifiers are a racial equity issue.
smarterhepa.bsky.social
🚌 The schools that we prioritize getting air purifiers to are ones that are disproportionately impacted by pollution, usually due to proximity to highways or air-polluting industry. But we believe that every kid deserves clean air at school, no matter where they live!

Kids deserve clean air at school!
smarterhepa.bsky.social
We're fans of addressing student health from a holistic perspective, and that includes making sure the air is clean.

Our purifiers scrub classroom air of the viruses and bacteria that lead to student illness and absenteeism. They're *proactive* solutions in a reactive world.
cleanairclub.bsky.social
As always, the best solution for the pandemic is collective. Our physical spaces, laws, and social norms need to be built to ensure our safety. Individual solutions aren't going to fix this. But they do help a bit in the meantime and it's worth finding a cheap way to access them.
cleanairclub.bsky.social
For those who find cutting the mask hole difficult, we recommend using either an X-acto knife or a 0.625" craft hole punch.

Sip valve recommends using scissors and it's really hard to get a precise circle cut with them.
cleanairclub.bsky.social
With this source, you can buy one official Sip Valve (for the ring that creates the seal) and then identical but cheaper replacement valves. It lowers the per-use cost dramatically
