So what's important in this work by Sion and colleagues?

People struggle to focus on 'healthy' meal decision-making

People didn't release that their behaviour was changing, e.g. doing less exercise, gaining weight

Existing advice evokes really negative responses #CMHP25

Structured plans and graded tasks may help build up confidence and low self-esteem, not to get people fit, but simply to encourage the first steps towards more physical activity #CMHP25

People often have low confidence or poor self-image, so giving them something like a gym pass is unlikely to help them increase their levels of exercise #CMHP25

Non-pharmacological management can take the form of these behaviour change interventions (modifiable determinants). The problem is, when we look at the research, the interventions are REALLY poorly described. #CMHP25

Things like information giving, diet, exercise etc. They don't map well to the TDF

So how can we address the metabolic side-effects of antipsychotics (e.g. weight gain, hypertension) using behaviour change techniques?

About half of people taking antipsychotics have these side-effects. The drugs cause physiological and behavioural changes. So we can intervene. #CMHP25

Addressing capability and opportunity is important, but we can't change behaviour if we don't target motivation, says Sion #CMHP25

Changing human behaviour is difficult, says Sion.

We can use behaviour change theory to identify barriers that stop people from being healthy & work out how to help them.

NICE now have guidance on behaviour change that "is a really good read" according to Sion #CMHP25

Sion is going to give us a general overview on behavioural science, and then speak specifically about antipsychotic side-effects and how we can use behavioural science techniques to address them #CMHP25
