36. Running Out of Time - Paramore #TheTwen2ie5

Paramore continue to be very difficult to pin down in their later era. this shot of Bloc Party-style new wave & post-punk finds them feeling spiky and stressed out, which is a feeling they always execute well.

just clocked that these photos, shot 6 years apart, were taken in the same room and almost on the exact same spot.

the depth in quality is outstanding. if Tuchel can nail down a 23-man squad for the last set of internationals before the tournament and get them functioning how that Chelsea team did in 2021 England really could be cooking.

think England have a real shot at the World Cup this time you know. they've got a strong first XI with a solid defensive base, finally got a proper #6 to partner Rice instead of leaving it all up to him in the middle, and absolutely loads of different attacking options and ways to win.

John Cleese turning out to be very anti-Reform was not on my bingo card for 2026 but it's welcome all the same

Eva's also the reason i'm INTO Weezer. in like 2010 she tweeted that she was gonna see em at some festival and i thought "oh if Eva likes Weezer then i'll like Weezer" and, well. yes. that turned out to be true.

37. Insomnia - Parannoul #TheTwen2ie5

i've mentioned how much i love quiet storms in pop. Parannoul conjures up loads of them. noisy emo & hazy shoegaze, cut through with melancholic electronics. somehow, the only "real" thing you hear is his voice! incredible.

the Vevo Era is the worst pop has ever been and calling it "recession pop" puts the cut-off at like 2013 when actually the entirety of 2010-2019 was a fucking black hole. chart pop nakedly turning itself into background gruel. then TikTok & 'Blinding Lights' came along and everything got better.

instead of calling it "recession pop" can we call it the Vevo Era.

38. Sympathy Is a Knife - Charli XCX #TheTwen2ie5

it's ok Charli, i understood what you were saying with this song even if Taylor didn't. you are a bit of an annoying cokehead on Brat, but you were human and vulnerable here. like that Covid album you did. so thanks!

it's a *far* superior song, but i've had friends wonder the same about Lily Allen's The Fear. once you write a song that's a bit of a Through the Looking Glass moment, a disconnect forms between yourself and the pop you're being asked to make. and that's probably how you end up with bloody Sheezus.

i think it was Todd in the Shadows (?) who said Katy's career was always gonna go *weird* after CTTR because once you make "purposeful pop" (like Katy said CTTR was) you partially disassociate from your persona/identity as a popstar and become almost too self-aware to carry on in the same way.
