Common Genders

is going on hiatus Hi everyone, this is Sylvia. Founder and host of Common Genders.

I will be putting Common Genders on hiatus until the end of the year.

Common Genders will return in 2026

I am currently finishing off my PhD, which should be submitted by the end of the year. Understandably, I am already very busy and at full capacity trying to finish this.

I also want to take the time to reflect on what I want Common Genders to be in the future. Socialists and feminists in the UK are at a critical moment; I want to ensure that in the new year, Common Genders can become a more active space for all of us to learn together.

I am looking forward to engaging more with socialists and feminists in Sheffield and beyond as we enter the new year.

If anyone is interested in talking about new directions or to help with Common Genders in 2026, send me an email:

In the middle, there are two pictures, one is of an agroecological farm and another is banners from the Landworkers Alliance during the Food in our Hands protest in April 2025.

Bluesky: @commongenders.org July’s session (online):

We will be reading:

- Share The Land: Modelling an agroecological land-sharing approach to UK land use - Ele Saltmarsh and Jyoti Fernandes (Landworkers Alliance).

Our new report ‘Share The Land’ models a vision for land use in the UK which is grounded in an agroecological land-sharing approach to farming and food production, exploring the trade-offs that arise between more localised production, dietary change and meeting climate and biodiversity targets.

- Soft Fruit and Hard Labour - Rees Nicolas and Sinjin Li (Vittles Magazine)

Strawberry picking and the long history of seasonal farm work.

- Renewing the Land Question: Against Greengrabbing and Green Colonialism - Kai Heron and Alex Heffron (New Socialist).

Neither rewilding nor agribusiness, but agroecological socialism.

We at Twentieth Century Communism are very sad to hear of Marika Sherwood's passing, a pioneering historian of communism, anti-colonialism and pan-Africanism. Amongst other writings, her book for @lawrencewishart.bsky.social on Claudia Jones was a ground-breaking work.

This book tells the story of Trinidad-born Claudia Jones, a key figure in the movement for racial justice in Britain.

This session has already SOLD OUT!

Very excited to be hosting this and looking forward to the discussions that will be held.

For anyone outside of Sheffield or can't make it to this one, the next session will be online.

These sessions will focus on lesser known socialist feminist literature.
