On these measures, Academy is probably more of a risk because it’s betting on the idea that the Discovery audience is big enough and loyal enough AND it’s theme and world is compelling enough for new viewers in the target demo that investing more into that thread will pay off.

Stuff like this tho, while it *seems* like a big risk - it likely isn’t. Trek has had a huge success to failure ratio in the last decade, animation is cheaper than it’s ever been to produce, and going after a new specialized audience means chance of alienating core audience is low.

Fair point, but that’s a risk with any franchise universe. It’s kind of a catch 22: Take risks, some concepts fail, execs get nervous. Be too consistent, franchise sprawls, audience gets bored, execs get nervous. Both result in potential pullback for new content.
