Behind every object in Weston Park Museum is a life lived and a story shared, just like Orville Fuller’s! 🧵

In honour of #BBCspringwatch being filmed up the road at Longshaw, here's some natured-themed children's magazines from the collections @sheffieldmuseums.bsky.social

(last one probably frowned on)

The Pillbox at Hecla Works was built during World War Two to protect the munitions work being carried out on this site. It can be found between Five Weirs Walk and the bottom of Attercliffe Cemetery #Sheffield

Happy Spring Equinox/ astronomical spring!

Here’s a beautiful clockwork model of the Earth, Sun and Moon. It was made around 1888 in Sheffield by Benjamin Gorrill, who worked as a saw-piercer and silversmith.

My wife and self tried our best to get out of Kelham Mills and into the street, but had to make our way back into [the] house, and only just managed it. Carried Mrs Andrews back into house. The prayer book was found in the mud after the receding of the water”.
curatorclara.bsky.social
In 1917 William Andrews donated this prayer book to the city’s museum collections, and remembered:

“My house was on the premises of John Charles & Sons, Kelham Forge and Rolling Mills. The water was between 5 & 6ft in my house.

Reflecting today on the #Sheffield Flood of 11-12th March 1864, which caused such devastation and loss.

Putting away some #Sheffield views that were on display in our Rivers exhibition- here's the Plan of Sheffield from an Actual Survey by Ralph Gosling, 1736. Lots of recognisable places, streets, path of the river Sheaf, gardens and orchards...

In shock that the #museum I have dedicated most of my working life to is threatened with closure. I urge #Leeds people to respond to the upcoming public consultation and fight to preserve such a loved and important site. Local government funding needs fixing urgently.

Just to avoid disappointment, the painting isn't on display at Weston Park Museum at the moment! It moved from Picturing Sheffield gallery to the Rivers exhibition, which has just been replaced with the Pete McKee exhibition. It'll be back out on display as soon as we have a space for it again 🙂
