Building Healthier Social Media: Updated Guidelines and New Features - Bluesky
Public discourse on social media has grown toxic and divisive, but unlike other platforms, Bluesky is building a social web that empowers people instead of exploiting them.

Notice that the rules specify every *user* must be treated with respect.

I don't recall charlie "unfortunately gun deaths are necessary to protect the second ammendment" kirk being a user of bluesky 🤔 curious.

Clearly they say "user" habitually but actually their priority is People of Interest.

While I also believe in decriminalizing recreational drugs, im not interested in the accessibility of injesting literal poison. Teflon should be banned entirely considering its health consequences, for example. Just because something exists doesnt mean we should/have to use it democratically.

This topic came up recently in a private group and your reply stuck out the most so lol

This argument only makes sense if the thing being "produced" is actually a benefit to humans. What utility is there in seizing the machine that screams
dandoesfx.bsky.social
I dont even see why you're dying on this hill considering ai in its current form is exclusively developed *by* big tech for the purposes of *enriching* big tech and devaluing labor astronomically while keeping people unemployed.

Like, how does that map positively to communism at all lol
dandoesfx.bsky.social
It is, actually, worse in a lot of ways and is exploited to be one of the largest water and fuel hogs in tech at the moment due to the sheer scale of the most popular models. Does that mean neural networks are shit? No. It means the current wave needs to be stopped.
dandoesfx.bsky.social
Ultimately no technology matters *at all* if its not actively benefitting the people using it or being developed to do so. Nuclear energy proved to have a much better longterm environmental impact than fossil fuels for the watts produced. Ai in its current form doesnt inherently benefit anyone.
dandoesfx.bsky.social
Chatbot girlfriends being used by a ton of people are replacing important elements of social behavior. When people suffer from addiction, the solution is connection with other people. These models clearly continue to starve them. In that way they're a bad kind of drug.
dandoesfx.bsky.social
Drugs dont wisper in your ear telling you to do things lol

There's also good reason to regulate the *use of* certain drugs. Not quite the way most countries do now, but everyone will tell you don't do anything alone if you get paranoid.

The issue with models like this is a social one.
dandoesfx.bsky.social
Its clear the issue here is they got a serious case of addiction and hyperfixation with an unregulated machine that tells them everything they want to hear and then some. The underlying issue was addictive tendencies needing treatment, the ai simply accelerated the process
dandoesfx.bsky.social
Im reminded of that spider-verse post on shxtter, showing how neural nets guided brush strokes to contort on 3D models in an intuitive way. Some kid qrt'd that saying "we're literally already losing the fight to AI."

Everyone rightfully clowned on em, because THATs actually progress. Not the same.
dandoesfx.bsky.social
Evangelists call anti-ai rhetoric "anti progress" because ai is seen as this new revolutionary tech and not what it actually is, an achievement of data scraping and server sizes. The base tech has for the most part existed for a decade. True progress would be using this tech to improve lives.
dandoesfx.bsky.social
Also worth pointing out AI the buzzword is not the same as AI the underlying technology (neural networks). Predictive text on roids is being sold as "the everything product" and THAT, along with it infecting Google etc., is what sucks. Statistical probability is actually very cool when used right.
dandoesfx.bsky.social
But we'll see. Point is comprehensive AI regulation in an era where the tech *can* be frighteningly accurate to the source material is FAR from intuitive; you'd need to treat AI regulation like labor laws which already get REGULALRLY circumvented or flat out ignored.
dandoesfx.bsky.social
Regulating the distribution of physical goods is sadly monumentally easier than regulating what computer software people have deplpyed on their local machines.

Had stablediffusion not pulled that stunt where everyone could fork it and run it, yeah I'd agree with you. That unfortunately mucked it up
dandoesfx.bsky.social
It's not pure hysteria. It's not people campaigning to stop a particle collider being built because it sounds like nuclear waste. It's actual, genuine destructive technology being pushed back by the people it hurts the most.

Slapping a hammer and sickle on your PFP doesn't make you literate, hun.
dandoesfx.bsky.social
There are, of course, droves of people who blindly hate ai et al without actually understanding it. There are also COUNTLESS people with very good reason to hate the direction of tech companies / the internet, the impact this has on *all* labor markets, and oh yeah psychosis bsky.app/profile/mhar...

This is a deeply unserious take.

Negative hysteria around those concepts were all based on incorrect information that was provably false *at the time.* Problems pointed out now are seeing immediate consequences exactly as described by their critics.
