"The only thing that could've increased the humiliation would have been the holding up of a dog biscuit tho' a treat for rolling over was proffered in the form of a tech deal, which Starmer wolfed down with all the grateful tail-wagging the president demands." My @heraldscotland.bsky.social column.
Why are even the most powerful so afraid of standing up to Donald Trump?
Trump’s UK visit exposed a humiliating deference from Starmer, royals and politicians alike, says our multi award-winning opinion columnist Dani…

Day 12 of #31DaysOfGraves - Notable Woman

An unassuming slab of stone off the Fife coast at Torryburn covers the mortal remains of Lilias Adie, the only known grave of an accused witch in Scotland

Buried beneath the tidal line by superstitious villagers in 1704, her grave was rediscovered in 2014

It will never cease to amaze/disappoint me (although let's face it, I ought to be used to it) how some men who cast themselves as champions of women are willing to ignore the behaviour of their idols and trash anyone who does otherwise.

Ricky Ross namechecked Chimmy Chungas, Henry Afrika's and Clatty Pat's during last night's Deacon Blue's gig at the Hydro. Talk about knowing your audience...

It’s called Dawn: Luther at Erfurt and is by Joseph Noel Paton. Anyway, poor Lilias. Maybe one day it will be rediscovered and her remains reinterred.

One story I already knew was that of Lilias Adie who was buried on Torryburn shore and whose skull was later dug up & sold to a phrenologist, but I’d never seen this painting by the phrenologist’s artist son in which it features.

Currently reading How To Kill A Witch by @clairekc.bsky.social and Zoe Venditozzi which is, as anticipated, fascinating, witty, political and full of human stories.

“Gannon-Doak on the left is a gift unopened and a toy kept in its box. It is a crime thriller missing its final page and bubble wrap un-popped.” There is noone who does match reports like @danielgraywriter.bsky.social. Every line of this is genius.

This puts me in mind of John Finnemore’s extension to the old magpie poem…

I’ve just seen 25, maybe 30 squirrels round two trees in the graveyard. If they didn’t have lovely bushy tails we’d call it an infestation. They were cute though.

Haha, he’s on his way to see his girlfriend so I hope not ;)

Ps I don’t think this proves anything about anything. I just think it’s funny.

On the subject of young people don’t read blah blah, our middle son charged into our house unexpectedly the other day demanding “the classics.” “Bring me your Brontes,” he said. Now he’s sent a pic of him reading The Handmaid’s Tale on a train with the message: “Performative maling.”

Just back from the last show of Edwyn Collins's last tour, in Edinburgh, his birthplace. An incredibly moving show, packed with favourites and hits. And the beginning of the encore, where he played 'Low Expectations' and 'Home Again' was absolutely emotionally devastating.
A seated Edwyn Collins, singing next to his son, standing, in front of his band. The backdrop says "Edwyn", in the style of the Elvis Comeback Show backdrop.

The fight itself is significant, but what's even more significant is what the fight says about my enemies

I like English degrees and I like apprenticeships. But which one is better? Only one way to find out: FIGHT.
