Nobody was better at understanding and harnessing the sound of specific musicians than Miles….maybe Duke Ellington, as he wrote specifically for each musician to highlight what they brought to the table. Duke asked Miles to be in his band, which Miles turned down, wish there was 1 recording of them.
Jimmie Blanton/ Duke Ellington - Pitter Panther Patter

Recorded: 1940

Jimmie Blanton - bass
Duke Ellington - piano

(Jimmie was his preferred spelling of his name & how he signed his name, although often misspelled as Jimmy. Poor guy passed away at 23 in 1942, who knows what he would have done)
Tune of the day…Jimmie Blanton/ Duke Ellington - Pitter Panther Patter. I put Blanton’s name 1st because it’s clear he’s doing something that hadn’t been done in jazz before with his virtuosity and tone. Duke knew it and offered him a job, the 1st night he heard him. #jazzsky youtu.be/xTA7-U-fjoU

That’s what makes jazz special, every musician has their own unique voice. And hearing those voices in different combinations at a specific moment in time within each musician’s personal development, while yet working together to create art, that’s a beautiful thing, and why I love this music so.
Joe Zawinul - Baptismal

Recorded: 1967

Joe Zawinul - piano
William Fischer - tenor saxophone
Jimmy Owens - trumpet
Richard Davis - bass
Roy McCurdy - drums
Freddie Waits - drums

I only hear 1 drummer on this, unless someone hears differently - but it seems both are credited. 🤷🏻‍♂️
Tune of the day…Joe Zawinul - Baptismal. Third Stream the blending of jazz & classical. This William Fischer composition is a great blend of modal, free, loose straight 8th groove with strings. Richard Davis’ bass is all over this especially interactive with Zawinul. #jazzsky youtu.be/s59qYNlN-0A

Rick Margitza - Ferriss Wheel

Recorded: 1989

Rick Margitza - tenor saxophone
Marc Johnson - bass
Adam Nussbaum - drums
Tune of the day…Rick Margitza - Ferriss Wheel. Although not well known, this is one of my favorite blues heads to play and I call it often. This melody has a great circular motion and shape to it that inspires a different approach and breaks blues solo cliches for me. #jazzsky youtu.be/atsBY2U9CrA

Jimmy Giuffre - Mack the Knife

Recorded: 1959

Jimmy Giuffre - clarinet
Jim Hall - guitar
Ray Brown - bass
Tune of the day…Jimmy Giuffre - Mack the Knife. This trio arrangement is set up more like a big band chart. There are 10 choruses of this tune and only 3 are improvised solos, one for each of them, the rest are different combinations of the 3 playing written lines. #jazzsky youtu.be/RnsHqQJwuC8

Adam Nussbaum - Relax Your Mind

Recorded: 2019

Adam Nussbaum - drums
Steve Cardenas - guitar
Nate Radley - guitar
Ohad Talmor - tenor saxophone
Tune of the day…Adam Nussbaum - Relax Your Mind. Not publicized enough, Adam released 2 discs of reinterpretations of Lead Belly’s music. Featuring 2 guitar players to make up for the 12 strings that Lead Belly played. I enjoy listening to the original version first. #jazzsky youtu.be/ROFhgRkqUN0

Nat Adderley - Pretty Memory

Recorded: 1960

Nat Adderley - cornet
Wes Montgomery- guitar
Bobby Timmons - piano
Sam Jones - cello
Keter Betts - bass
Louis Hays - drums
Tune of the day…Nat Adderley - Pretty Memory. This Bobby Timmons tune feels perfect for 1960, it’s bluesy hard bop soul jazz, but also with the pairing of cello and bass, has a Mingus like aggressive rawness to it. Nat is at his commanding bluesy best. #jazzsky youtu.be/YPJXseV1wRk

Trio Eclectic - Mirror Mirror

Recorded: 2015

Dave Goldberg - tenor saxophone and effects
Duane Allen - guitar and effects
Jason Harnell - drums
Self Promotion Sunday…Mirror Mirror - this tune of mine has two sections to it, one very dark sounding, and one with the same shape and bright sounding. They are separated by a short drum solos. Saxophone solos on the 1st section, guitar on the 2nd. #jazzsky youtu.be/oRqbxS-CB7M

Steve Masakowski - Jesus Last Ballad

Recorded: 1993

Steve Masakowski - guitar
Tune of the day…Steve Masakowski - Jesus Last Ballad. All of the things that make the guitar a unique instrument are on display here. Cascading harp like arpeggios spill out of Steve’s 7 string guitar on this ballad most of us know from the Bill Evans Affinity album. #jazzsky youtu.be/sv9pqIUNxR0

Benny Golson - Reunion

Recorded: 1957

Benny Golson - tenor saxophone
Kenny Dorham - trumpet
J.J. Johnson - trombone
Wynton Kelly - piano
Paul Chambers - bass
Max Roach - drums
Tune of the day…Benny Golson - Reunion. This is actually a Gigi Gryce tune that was part of the Blakey book. It’s possible Benny wrote the intro/outro to it. Regardless it’s nice harmonized melody over the standard I’ll Remember April featuring an all-star lineup. #jazzsky youtu.be/g9joIRmiUeA

Carla Bley - Vashkar

Recorded: 2013

Carla Bley - piano
Andy Sheppard - soprano saxophone
Steve Swallow - electric bass
Tune of the day…Carla Bley - Vashkar. After doing the Tony Williams Lifetime version yesterday, I thought listening to a completely different chamber music like interpretation by the composer would be interesting. Haunting..you can just hear the tabla in your head. #jazzsky youtu.be/OR8Er04nhLg

Tony Williams - Vashkar

Recorded: 1969

Tony Williams - drums
John McLaughlin - guitar
Larry Young - Hammond B-3 organ
Tune of the day…Tony Williams - Vashkar. Lifetime Emergency! too much rock for some jazz fans. Too much free jazz for some rock fans. But groundbreaking in its power and rawness and somehow captures 1969 perfectly. Tony is a force of nature on this Carla Bley tune. #jazzsky. youtu.be/RcO8WDztdzU
