My new @science.org editorial on the role of scientists in defending democracy is out today. As authoritarianism takes hold in the US, we must fight for the democratic principles that enable a free society and scientists have a key role. I hope you'll join us.

Scientists’ role in defending democracy
The United States’ democratic leadership, commitment to freedom of expression, and investment in the pursuit of knowledge have long enabled its preeminence in science and technology. Yet today we are ...

By design, federal statistical agencies operate independently to guard against politicization of data collection and reporting.

This is an alarming and dangerous move that threatens the scientific integrity of independent statistical agencies across the government. www.wsj.com/livecoverage...

President Trump said he directed his team to fire the top Bureau of Labor Statistics official after the bureau issued a weak jobs report on Friday. Trump in a social media post said Erika McEntarfer, ...

"The Trump administration's intent is clear: They want to undermine or overturn the endangerment finding so as to evade EPA's legal responsibility to address the harms caused by climate change," said UCS's Rachel Cleetus. "This is simply a giveaway to the fossil fuel industry..."
Trump's EPA now says greenhouse gases don't endanger people
The Trump administration wants to reverse a 2009 EPA finding that greenhouse gases endanger people. The finding is the basis for much of the United States' climate change regulations.

The current changes proposed for the EV tax credit have no logic. The credit is virtually eliminated, punishing US manufacturing. The only current car that keeps the credit in 2026: a Honda made by GM in Mexico. But GM can’t get credits for their EVs, incl 1s made in US blog.ucs.org/dave-reichmu...
Very Few People Will Benefit From the New EV Tax Credit. That is By Design.
Getting rid of EV incentives is a bad policy choice that will hurt drivers and our economy.

However, there are some important differences between AVs and Lyft/Uber. On the + side, likely lower P0 (commuting to ridehailing location) miles for AVs.
OTOH, AVs likely less efficient due to sensor/compute power and aero drag from roof pods and pooling is going to be harder to implement
davereichmuth.bsky.social
It would be a bit complicated and I’m not sure we have enough data available. We have looked at ridehailing emissions www.ucs.org/sites/defaul...
and the deadhead miles matter, but not as much as the switch from ICE to EV

California can’t clean its air or slow climate change without switching from gasoline to electricity. But there’s a roadblock: the biggest car seller in the state is one of the most vocal opponents to a transition away from fossil fuels. blog.ucs.org/dave-reichmu...
Why Does Toyota Oppose Clean Air?
There is no way to protect our health and our climate by simply making better gasoline cars.

It’s the same question with AI, right? Use AI to get rid of customer service jobs etc. and then ultimately have no customers.
The ‘vision’ for these guys seem to be new cities where they are the ruler with AI and robots instead of needing those pesky proles. (Musk - Mars, Thiel - seasteads, etc )

We were learning how new technologies could improve mobility for communities. We were gaining insights on what transportation investments work best where. We were asking research questions that hadn't been asked before.

Wild to see it all reduced to "woke research."

US DOT just cancelled $54 million in university research:
—UC Davis: $12m
—NYC City College: $9m
—USC: $9m
—NYU: $6m
—San Jose State: $6m
—U. of NOLA: $6m
—Johns Hopkins: $6m

All had committed the woke sins of studying how to make transportation less polluting and/or less inequitable.

I’m sure Waymo’s vehicles cost more to make and deploy, but they do have the advantage of existing and actually working.

Is there that much that can be removed from the 3 to get the cost down (without redesign of interior) ?

There's lots of uncertainty surrounding EV policy right now.

However, it's important to remember what we can be certain of: EVs are a critical technology for reducing pollution from transportation.

This new complaint against DOGE is truly cranked up to 11 from start to finish. What a way to start a lawsuit
storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us... h/t @mikesacks.bsky.social
INTRODUCTION
1. Defendant Elon Musk is not, legally, the President of the United States, nor is he a
federal elected official of any kind. And Mr. Musk is not a Senate-confirmed officer of the United
States. But he and his so-called “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE)—not, in fact, a
federal executive department—are lawlessly and unconstitutionally wielding sweeping power
across the executive branch. As Mr. Musk and DOGE lawlessly seize power over large swaths of
federal spending, decimate the federal workforce, and dismantle federal agencies, they are severely
harming, and threatening further imminent harm, to everyday Americans.
