The CBC is reporting “The words “51st state” weren’t uttered in the public part of this meeting, but #Trump referenced the idea multiple times.” Unfortunately my March piece about the vapid nonsense that #Trump spouts about #Canada is still painfully relevant. doncurren.blogspot.com/2025/03/the-...

“With COVID, vaccines, Lyme disease, any of it — I’m not your enemy,” I told my seatmate as we were getting ready to disembark. “And I know you’re not the enemy, either.”
“True,” he agreed. “But they always want to make someone your enemy.”

Thanks. It’s a remarkably photogenic province that tends to get overlooked. One day at lunch at a seafood restaurant we heard a local tell some European tourists that PEI and Nova Scotia get most of the tourist trade - and the locals are perfectly fine with that.

Gotta love that unbearable tension. My interest in Pynchon has been reinvigorated by some of the pieces surrounding that new movie; I may have to embark on Mason & Dixon for the very first time.

He is. He popped up a few years back in a Sally Potter movie - The Party. I hadn’t seen him in anything for a long time and I’d kind of forgotten him, but he did a great turn in that movie.

Yes, that does sound like a lot of fun. Thanks!

Yes, expectations so often do interfere with one’s engagement with books - as they do with so many other things.
I wasn’t aware of that book; it does sound interesting. Thanks for engaging, and for promoting the thread. It’s much appreciated.

It’s great to have cinematic memories like that. I was hitting the art-house cinemas in Toronto pretty heavy in those days - I believe I saw The American Friend five times in fairly rapid succession.

Cool! Both great titles. Thanks for responding.

For some reason it took me decades to see that one, but I finally had the pleasure courtesy of the Fox Theatre last summer and it’s been floating around in my head ever since.

I’ll have to check those out. I loved the way Berlin looked in Win Wenders’ Wings of Desire.

What Thiel is saying about tax havens = what Altman is saying about copyright:

"I can't be rich unless you let me steal from you."

This is how Broligarchs differ from oligarchs of yore: the latter tried to hide their thievery; the Broligarchs trumpet their entitlement to steal as a natural right.

Yup, exercise is a key for osteoarthritis. Biking has really helped me with knee pain / mobility from arthritis.
