Riding the frog in 1545.

The Zurich-based printer Christoph Froschauer used this trademark frog on the title page of Conrad Gessner’s 'Bibliotheca Universalis'. #earlymodern #bookhistory

The trademark frog derives from a translation of the printer’s last name: frog is in German “Frosch”.

A boy sitting on a frog is shown. This is sixteenth-century printer Christoph Froschauer's trademark. The German word for frog is "Frosch", so Froschauer had his trademark decision done.

Storytelling with an #earlymodern book:

➡️ printed on paper in 1640
➡️ bound in a recycled medieval parchment page (likely in the 17th century)
➡️ had contact with water while being stored (stains!)
➡️ party been eaten by book worms (my guess: 18th century)
➡️ digitized in the 3rd millennium

tunnels and small holes in a paper page and the parchment binding. These tunnels are caused by insect larvae - "book worms".
